The Handley Page HALIFAX
Fayid
Overlooking Egypt's Bitter Lakes, little is known about Fayid's early history except
that a landing ground existed there before the Second World War.
It sidles into the history books in February 1937 when 'A' Flight of 208 Sqn
was detached in from its main base at Helipolis.
In August 1942, a detachment of Halifaxes from 76 Sqn arrived
for attacks on Tobruck. The amalgamation of this detachment with a similar one known
as 10/227 Sqn resulted in the formation
at Fayid of a new No.462 Sqn, RAAF, whose Halifaxes first
raided Tobruck in early September before transferring to Kilo 40 in November.
