STONE; Scale 4mm - 1ft. Gauge 18.2mm ('EM') by Ken Gibbons Size: 9ft 6ins x 4ft (3m x 1.3m) (including operator space) Operators: Two, Transport: One car. Stone is a small 'vignette' of a layout set on the North Devon and Cornwall Junction Railway. All three stations on this line were very similar in appearance, it is therefore in keeping that Stone should look somewahat like my previous N.D & C. Jc. layout 'Sheepwash'. That said, I have obviously tried to make it as different as possible, and much of the change stems from the fact that this layout is designed to be usable in a room 6ft 8ins long. For exhibition purposes, the main fiddle yard deck is replaced with one of 3ft (2ft for home use), and an additional small fiddle yard added at the opposite end to enable through trains to run. The station building, whilst compressed to fit the site, is in the style of the lines engineer, one Col. H.F.Stephens, although the use of standard SR pre-cast platform edges is a testimony to the station being 'added' to the line shortly after its completeion. Traffic catered for includes Ball Clay trains, plus some milk and fertilliser traffic. The layout is intended to be run set in 2 eras, firstly circa 1980, during the freight only years, just before the class 25s went from the Devon area. Most workings were powered by these, though class 31s were also used, and the occasional class 33 or even a DMU special may possibly show up. Also, providing I've sorted the class 22s, 1968-70 can be portrayed. This latter era may also see a modicum of regular passenger traffic, on an Okehampton - Barnstable working. Ref: |
