Now there's a way you can do some digging without getting your hands dirty! Since 1801 the Government has been carrying out a national census. The records contain the details of who lived in a house, how old they were and what they did for a living.

They have carried out their surveys every 10 years, and after 100 years have elapsed they allow the general public to look at the information they have found. The records make fascinating reading.
