FARMING IN ANCIENT EGYPT

Farming was extremely important to Ancient Egyptians, it's development on the banks of the River Nile helped bring about one of the first ever civilised societies.

 Your first task should you choose to accept it, is to find out as much as you can about the way the Ancient Egyptians used to farm.

 

Listed below is a series of questions which should help you discover all the important facts. Once you have found out as much as you can, your second task is to produce a web page which describes farming in ancient Egypt.

 1. Why was/is the River Nile so important to the Egyptian farmers?

 2. Ancient Egyptian farmers had to plan their farming according to three seasons. Can you name the seasons and explain what caused them?

 3. Ancient Egyptians used a variety of tools to help them farm. How many can you name?

 4. How do these tools differ from those used by modern day farmers?

 5. How do we know how the Ancient Egyptians used to farm?

 6. The Ancient Egyptians 'developed a sophisticated irrigation system.' What was the purpose of irrigation?

 7. Why were villages built on high ground?

 8. How did farmers mark the boundaries of their fields? Is this different from modern farmers methods?

 9. How would water from the River Nile be transferred to the irrigation canals?

 10. What were the crops the Ancient Egyptians grew? Are they different to the crops we grow today?

 11. What different foods were eaten 3000 to 5000 years ago? How do we know?

 12. If the floods washed away a farmers boundaries how would he know which fields were his?

 13. Would you have liked to have been a farmer in Ancient Egypt, or would you rather be a farmer today. What are your reasons?
