The seed was sown in the Autumn of 1973 when Ken Smithem was asked to arrange walks for a few interested colleagues in the Lucas electronics factory at Mere Green. Having thought he had discouraged them with the scramble up Tryfan they came back for more, so the idea of a club was formed. At an inaugural meeting, which was so well attended that it filled the whole canteen area, the Lucas Fellwalking and Rambling Club was born. Representatives from the nine main midlands factory areas were elected to produce a programme of walks.
The cold, 20 - seater coach for the first club walk, left the Great King Street factory on 17th February 1974, bound for Lathkill Dale. In this first year. members' subs were deducted from their monthly wages. Finding this arrangement less than satisfactory, the club was dissolved at its first AGM in February 1975, and reopened to all-comers as the Hill Walking Club - a double entendre reflecting the Hill Village area of its origin as well as our intention of being much more than a rambling club.
Ray Siddell was the first chairman, and Stan Patchett designed the first club badge which is still seen on a few rucksacks, and now on the website. Little remains in the club archive from that very early period, but an entry from May 1975 details two walks interestingly described as a 'Ramble' and a 'Fell Walk'. The Ramble led by Joy and Ken Madeley took walkers from Patterdale, along Grisedale to finish at Grasmere. The Fell Walk led by Stan Bellaby and (of course!) Ken Smithem, was over St Sunday Crag, offering walkers a chance to watch fell runners on the Fairfield Horseshoe.
Many friendships, marriages, subgroups for weekly walks and backpacking have been generated from the contacts through the Club – we all have that common interest at heart.
May it long continue.
Ken

Sunday 17 June 2012 6.00am Carnedds
I recently came across a guide book which stated that
there is no wilder place south of the Cairngorms than the Carneddau.
I disagree as I have to give that crown to the Rhinogs. However there
is no disputing that this is the highest upland massif south of Glasgow
. It is essentially a whale back ridge running roughly south-west
to north –east and it’s proximity to the sea adds a different
dimension in the northern part of the range. Then there are the Carneddau
wild ponies of course – always nice to see those.
Those who opt for a route that takes in Carnedd Uchaff (now Cardedd
Gwenllian) will, sad but true, be in one of only two places in Snowdonia
that is more than 3 miles from a road. The other of course is in the
Rhinogydd.
All our walks finish in Abergwyngregyn (river mouth of the white shells)
on the A55 and you may ponder as you look at this road that it is
recorded as recently as 1720, coaches with travellers bound for Ireland
had to be dismantled and carried onward in pieces, with the attendant
risk of local long-bow wielding brigands lurking behind the crags.
Anyway
B Walk Distance 17.7km Ascent 1091 m Descent
1092m
Starting from the village SH655727 this circular route follows the
road to Bont Newydd and takes the North Wales path to the north of
Foel Ganol ascending the ridge to the east of Yr Orsedd. We then follow
the ridge to Drum, a bronze age platform, on to Foel Fras before descending
from Llwytmor to the east of Aber Falls.
Leaders – Gavin Palmer and others
C Walk Distance 13.7 km Ascent 754 m Descent
755 m
Also a circular route following the B route to Bont Newydd the C party
ascend Foel Ganol onto Yr Orsedd thereby covering the ascent of the
high ground early in the day. The route then follows the ridge over
Carnedd y Ddelw before descending the path to the reservoir at Lyn
Anafon and the valley walk back to the village via Bont Newydd again.
Leaders - Wendy and Bob Price
A Walk Distance 19.7 km Ascent 1190 m Descent
1430 m
The reason for the additional descent is that this walk starts from
the A5 near Gwern Gof Isaf (SH687602). Ascending the Braich to Pen
Yr Helgi Du (Hill of the dog from Hell?) the route follows the entire
ridge back to Abergwyngregyn via Carnedd Llewelyn, Foel Grach , Carnedd
Gwenllian, Foel Fras and reversing the C route to the village.
Leaders – Dave Arnot and Peter Williams

The northern Rhinogs present some of the roughest and toughest walking to be found anywhere in Wales. The hills form a barrier stretching for 13 miles from the Vale of Ffestiniog in the north to the Mawddach estuary in the south. Rhinog Fawr and Rhinog Fach have a beauty all of their own and are the jewels of this area. Our walks will start from the southern and eastern approaches and will include all of the main summits.

Fri 28 Sept - Mon 1 Oct 2012
Club Weekend Tenby
"From our base at the Belgrave Hotel on the Esplanade we have two optional walks for both the Saturday and Sunday of our coastal walking weekend in Tenby.
Saturday:
Short walk - 09.43. Catch the train
to Lamphey arriving 10.00
Long walk - 09.43. Catch the train to Pembroke arriving 10.03
From Lamphey, the route goes directly south by lane and then footpath to arrive at Freshwater East by Portelew House. We work our way through the caravan site to the Coastal Path then follow it all the way back to Tenby. A short detour into Manorbier is thoroughly recommended as it is an ideal spot for a refreshment break. We leave Manorbier by the higher path which skirts the ancient church affording us a fabulous view of the castle before regaining the coastal path down a slope just to the east of Priest's Nose.
From there we continue along the Coastal Path, where there are a couple of optional 'headland extras' - to Lydstep Point and Giltar Point. From the latter we can to return to Tenby along firm sand if the tide is right.
The longer walk from Pembroke takes a more circuitous route to the coast at Freshwater East eventually arriving on to the B4584 just to the west of Portelew House.
Sunday:
Both walks: 09.00. Catch the 381 bus (the Haverfordwest bus) from Upper Park Road by the Tourist Information Office to Kilgetty.
From Kilgetty, both walks will take lanes which go over the high bridge which we went under on the bus and lead via Ivy Chimney Lane into Stepaside. Here the walks diverge.
The short walk continues down Pleasant Valley to reach the Coastal Path at Wiseman's Bridge from where we take the Coastal Path into Tenby. The long walk turns left under the road then proceeds via the old Stepaside Inn into Bird's Lane.
The walk then goes over Stagger's Hill to Summerhill. The bridle track is followed to Colby Lane from where we turn south to the coast at Amroth.
The Coastal Path is then followed back to Tenby".

Colin.

The Chilterns are an attractive range of hills forming a chalk escarpment in central southern England, stretching from the River Thames in Oxfordshire to Hitchin in Hertfordshire. Although not particularly high, they provide opportunities for interesting and varied walking-gently rolling hills, beech woodlands, chalk down lands and picturesque villages - in what we hope may be an early spring.

The Hill Walking Club offers a warm welcome to people who enjoy challenging and adventurous walks in mountainous, sometimes remote terrain.
Walking once a month on a Sunday, our programme takes us to the best of the high places in England and Wales.Starting from Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands, we travel there and back by coach, replacing the stress of driving with a comfortable journey, and maybe even a nap and a drink.
We usually offer three walks of varying length and difficulty, and because we take the safety of our members seriously, all routes are thoroughly researched and led by experienced walkers. We also have local evening walks in summer, occasional club nights in winter and weekends away at least twice a year.
We are a convivial group and look forward to welcoming new enthusiasts to our club
The following list of clothing and equipment is agreed by the Club Committee, and links directly with the club rules. If committee members are unhappy about your clothing you may be restricted in the walks you can do, or even excluded from the days walk.

SPRING 2012 NEWSLETTER
Springtime again, with lighter evenings and the promise of warmer weather to come! It’s been a relatively mild winter and exceptionally dry, causing drought conditions over much of the UK. Certainly on recent recces in the Lakes we found it very dry underfoot. If the dry weather continues, let’s hope there are no access restrictions, due to fire risk, in our National Parks later in the year
AGM
The minutes of the AGM have already been circulated
by email but to summarise;
Thirty one members attended the AGM in February at the Plough and Harrow
on Slade Road. Arthur Drinkwater, having experienced fitness problems over
the last year, stood down as chairman and Carol Gosling is now in the chair.
There was the usual round up of activities over the past year, and John
Collins, Arthur Drinkwater, Carol Gosling and Wendy Price have been re-elected
to continue on the committee. One third of the committee retire by rotation
each year. However, as a previous committee member had resigned part
way through his 3-year tenure, 4 vacancies were created at the AGM in February,
2006. This situation was perpetuated at the AGM in February, 2009.
All four members elected at those meetings have thus been re-elected.
Discussions took place on the difficulties of walks and club insurance.
FEBRUARY WEEKEND
2012
This year, twenty four members stayed at the Royal Oak Inn at Rosthwaite-
our base for the February weekend in the Lakes. The hotel was excellent
with friendly staff, good service, and some hearty home cooking. The afternoon
tea and scones were a very welcome touch!
As usual three guided walks of varying lengths and ascents were on offer
on both days. On Saturday, the walks centred round the Rosthwaite Fells
taking in Allen Crags, Glaramara and Bessyboot. On Sunday, the A party ascended
Eagle Crag and Sergeant’s Crag and then swung northwest to complete
Ullscarf, Great Crag and Grange fell. The B walk took in Maiden Moor and
Cat Bells from High Spy whilst the C party ascended Castle Crag via the
Allerdale Ramble and then up to Watendlath.
As the Royal Oak is situated in the heart of Borrowdale, it meant that all
our walks started directly from the hotel door –an added bonus. We
were also very lucky with the weather on both days- actually better on the
Sunday than the forecast- so views were reasonable with only a little low
cloud on the highest tops. Thanks to Gavin Palmer for organising another
most successful weekend.
QUIZ NIGHT MARCH
20th
Twenty six members and friends came along to the Plough and Harrow for the
grand quiz. If you weren’t there you missed a treat! Colin Lowrey
was an excellent quiz master and John Collins kept the score. We had a variety
of questions including general knowledge, walking, famous “Colins”
and some tricky Dingbats to solve whilst we enjoyed a sausage and chips
supper. It was a close contest with the eventual winners being Colin Little
and Richard and Carol Gosling. Thanks to Colin Lowrey and John Collins,
for organising the evening and putting so much time and effort into researching
the questions.
EVENING WALKS
May heralds the start of our monthly summer evening walks. John Collins
has organised the first one on Tuesday May 29th starting
at 7.30pm from the Green Man at Middleton. Hope many of you will be able
to join us for the walk, or possibly just for a drink back at the Green
Man at around 9pm.
NEW PROGRAMME 2012/2013
After much discussion by the committee, the new programme is ready for printing
and will be distributed shortly. The web site will be updated as soon as
possible. Thanks to all those members who put forward suggestions for the
walks and thanks to Sylvia Burns for producing the programme and to Richard
Gosling for updating the website.
This year we again only intend having two club nights, one in the Autumn
and one in the Spring- see website/programme for details. Evening walks
will be from May through to July 2012 and then begin again in May 2013.
AUTUMN WEEKEND
28th SEPTEMBER-1st OCTOBER 2012
Arrangements for the autumn weekend at Tenby are underway. The Belgrave
Hotel has been chosen as the base and Colin Little, the weekend organiser,
is visiting the area to recce suitable walks. Please contact Colin as soon
as possible if you are interested in going on what promises to be another
excellent weekend of coastal walking. More details to follow in the
next few months.
CLUB NEWS AND REMINDERS
As our programme year runs from May to May, we have recently had to renegotiate
coach prices with Bowens. Despite rocketing fuel prices, which have certainly
increased the costs of recces, we are pleased to report that the quotes
we have accepted from Bowens show virtually no increase from our 2011/12
coach costs. As long as we continue to have a good take up on seats, the
walk costs should remain reasonable.
At a request from a member at the AGM, the cost of each months walk should be posted on the website in the week prior to the walk.
The temporary cap on membership which was imposed last autumn has now been lifted and we are accepting new members again subject to completing two B walks. We will obviously continue to monitor the situation and may need to reassess if coach seats are at a premium but at present we are open to new business!
A plea from our leaders. If you decide to change parties in the middle of the walk, please make sure that a leader from BOTH parties is aware of this. They need to know how many they have in their group.
Administration:
If you are on the waiting list for the next months walk, it is your
responsibility to contact Colin Little after the preceding walk, to ascertain
that you have a coach seat. Don’t just assume you have a place.
If you cancel a place after the Thursday before the walk you are liable
for the cost of the seat unless Colin can sell it to someone on the waiting
list.
PEOPLE NEWS
Some sad news. Most of our long standing members will
remember Jane and Roger Stickney who walked with us regularly until a few
years ago. We are sorry to report that Roger has passed away very recently.
On a happier note, belated birthday greetings to one of our long standing members. Tony Knowles recently celebrated his 80th birthday and he’s still walking with us! Congratulations on reaching this milestone Tony.

Hill Walking Club
Rules
1 The annual subscription is set by the Committee and will run from 1st January to 31st December.
2 The Club requires that all members participating in full day walks are equipped according to the requirements outlined in the document which they receive when accepted for membership. Failure to do this could result in being excluded from the walk, and possible expulsion from the Club.
3 Members will have priority booking up to 1 week before the day of the walk. After that any remaining seats will be made available to non-members. The fare for the day becomes due in full at the time of booking, and will be collected on the day of the walk. If the seat is cancelled later than 7pm on the Thursday prior to the walk, the fare will still be payable unless the seat is sold.
4 The coach will leave Mere Green at the time stated in the programme. Refunds will not be available for those who miss it.
5 In the event of the coach being oversubscribed, members who sign on waiting lists for a walk must accept the Committee’s decisions re priority. It is the member’s responsibility to contact the Secretary before the walk to confirm or reject their place on the coach.
6 Visitors and guests are welcome on full day walks at the discretion of the Committee, having given prior notice. They will be charged a visitor’s fare and be expected to adopt the rules regarding walking and equipment.
7 During the walk, it is the responsibility of all walkers to accept the guidance of the leaders, respect the countryside codes and maintain a corporate responsibility which ensures a safe and successful day for all participants.
8 Members on
walks must inform the leaders if they are aware of any medical condition
or other reasons which might affect the successful completion of the walk.
