Young Athletes T & F Jarrow 21st July 2002

Richmond and Zetland Harrier's Junior Boy's team completed their Division One East Young Athletes T&F League season with a match at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow on Sunday 21st July. They went into the fixture in 14th place out of 16 teams, needing good performances from a full team. Despite the usual hat-trick of wins from Sam Stanislaus (this time in the 400m, javelin and high jump) and firsts for Philip Fitzpatrick in the 1500m and Aaron Shaw in the 100m hurdles, only ten athletes made the trip - and this included Matt Prosser, who bravely competed in the throws having picked-up a quadriceps injury at the Knockout Plate match earlier in the month. The team finished 3rd on the day behind Rowntrees and Tynedale, stuck in 14th place and will compete in Division Two next season.

AAA T & F Championships 10-11th August 2002

Having missed an opportunity to compete in the English Schools T&F Championships early in July as he was already booked on a school trip to France, Sam Stanislaus made-up with a third place from the AAA T&F Championships over the weekend of Saturday 10th/Sunday 11th at Crystal Palace. His performances this season, running, jumping and throwing, have been outstanding and he qualified to compete in both high jump and triple jump. Sam leapt a personal best 11m69 in the triple jump to earn his bronze medal, just 11cm short of silver. Earlier in the season, Sam cleared a Club record 1m72 in the high jump and a similar jump would've earned him a second medal but on the day he had to settle for 1m65 (that's nearly five and a half feet in old money!) and 8th place - not bad for a National competition.

Yorkshire Veterans Series 14th August 2002

Ripon Road Runners hosted a Road Race for the Yorkshire Veteran's League on the evening of Wednesday 14th. Fine and sunny weather for the five and a bit mile course from the Cricket Club, out and back through Studley Roger and the Deer Park, ensured good times. Being a Yorkshire Veteran's League Race, numbers cost a mere £2! and there were sandwiches and more for all. Two Harriers competed: Mike Brooks finished 27th in 34:04 and Ian Hepworth finished 61st in 37:12.

Kirby Steven 10 Mile Race 18th August 2002

Last Sunday, Shaun Purkiss interrupted a camping weekend with family and friends for a swift outing in the Kirby Steven 10 mile Road Race. He was only slightly disappointed with missing the magic one hour mark by just ten seconds as he finished in 6th place over a hilly course on a hot day. Stewy Bell of Chester-le-Street followed-up his second place in the C D Bramhall/Darlington 10K the previous Sunday with a win in a course record time of 52:40.
