The X-C season started with the Sunderland Harriers Open Races and Relays at Farringdon School on Sunday last in unusually fine weather. The meeting started with a new event, a one-mile race for under 11s with medals for the first six boys and girls. Two youngsters ran their first race for the Club - Niall Scott of Leeming finished 6th and eight-year-old Fergus Roberts of Northallerton was 8th. The following races were over the traditional 1.8 mile course around parkland adjacent to the school playing fields and the hard ground resulted in some very fast times. Douglas was the second of the Roberts family to compete and he finished 2nd, best result on the day, in the under 13 boys race with a time of 11:24. Sister Jessie ran in the under 15 girls race and finished 3rd in 11:59 after outsprinting the chasing pack in the run-in. Paul Roberts, their Dad, was the fourth member of the family to run and he too made his competitive debut for the Harriers “B” team in the Senior & Veteran Men’s Relay Race. The RZH “A” team finished 5th (Shaun Purkiss 10:45, Jon Orange 10:22, Dan Brooks 10:46 & Robin Carter 10:51), the Veteran’s team were 14th overall and 3rd in category (Ian Scott 10:55, Chris Peacock 11:14, “Taff” Rogers 11:42 & Jim Robinson 11:54) and the “B” team were one behind in 15th place (Brian McNabb 11:02, Mike Brooks 12:12, Paul Roberts 12:05 & Jerry Springer 10:34). The Ladies Race was last on the card for the Club and it proved to be “race of the day” for Morag Macdonald of Chester-le-Street as she won in a course record time of 10:40. Behind her, Rachel Robinson placed 12th in 12:25, two places and fifteen seconds in front of Louise Jackson.
