We have struggled, ambled along etc during some training sessions this summer for various reasons however the future is looking a lot more organised once again with the newly qualified "Eager Beavers" or level ones. We are sadly loosing Graeme who has been an inspiration to the club with his determination, experience and enthusiasm and I strongly believe Graeme’s "influence" whilst coaching me as a Junior and seeing me through my first few steps as a coach is the reason I am still in athletics after joining the club in 1982/83 and for this I thank him…(I think!) and his support shall be sadly missed.

I would like to thank ALL the athletes who competed in the league, congratulate you all and wish you well for the winter season, be it indoors or Cross Country.

Fiona Hughes Team Manager (Track and cross-country for Females)

Level 3 Coach.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

A better year than some in that we avoided relegation, although the margin could hardly have been closer, but more about that later.

A better year because we had an improvement in the ratio of younger athletes versus old codgers – more athletes whose points are scored in double figures rather than those doing the event for just one point.

And a better year because Eric Williams and Neil Piper volunteered as field and track judges respectively, alongside Heather and Wendy, and contributed invaluable points to the total.

The Club started the 2001 Northern Men’s League season in Division 4SE, promoted from Division 5NE because of League reorganisation. The first match was at Horsfall Stadium, Bradford and 8 athletes made the journey, regulars Shaun Purkiss, John Wild, Dan Brooks and myself with James and Scott Wardman, John Duncan and Gavin Penman. Although small in numbers, the combination of sprinters, runners, jumpers and throwers was about right. There were wins for James in the A 1500m, Scott in the A 400 hurdles and John W in the A hammer (his first League win in 5 seasons of competition) plus Dan in the B 1500m, John D in the B 110 hurdles and myself in the B steeplechase. We finished the match in 2nd place, just 15 match points behind winners Chesterfield.

There were the same number of athletes for match 2 at Woodbourne Road, Sheffield, the regulars plus John D and Scott, Chris Peacock and Robin Carter, but the imbalance showed - we had no B string high jump nor triple jump and didn’t make a mark in the B javelin. Dan was our only winner, in the A steeplechase and the B 110 hurdles; the team finished 5th and were tied in joint 3rd place with both Bradford and Halifax with 7 League points.

We competed in the first round of the Inter-Club Plate at Darlington in June and were narrowly beaten into 3rd place - New Marske 110 points, Lancaster & Morecambe 108points and R&Z 103 points. With just one man per event and fifteen athletes to chose from, the Club had both strength and depth. There were wins for Mark Hawtin in the steeplechase, Dave Armstrong in the long jump and for the 4 x 400 relay team, Aaron Shaw made his Senior debut with two 2nd places in the triple jump and javelin, Dan ran a PB 2.01.8 in the 800m for 2nd place and John W managed two 2nd and one 3rd place from his three heavy throws. The match was effectively decided on the penultimate event with a poor handover in the 4 x 100 relay but Rudyard Kipling’s "if" is an over-used lament.

Match 3 in the League was at Derby and the 300-mile round trip deterred all but six athletes and Eric Williams. The regulars were rounded-out by Tigere Kushamba and Richard Gibb and filled 28 out of 34 individual slots plus a relay in an attempt to avoid a drubbing. Kush was outstanding - he won the A 100m in 11.1 and the A 200m in 22.7, yards/metres/streets ahead of the competition and jogged the B 400m in 59.3 in between. Hot on his heels points-wise was Dan with wins in the A 400 hurdles and B 110 hurdles plus 2nd in the A 1500m but the match ended on a low note with the discovery that an athlete in the A 800m, who broke early, hadn’t been disqualified as it hadn’t been reported during the match. The result stood; R&Z in 5th place with 201 match points, behind Bradford and Halifax in equal 3rd place with 202, the Club were now down to 5th place in the League, the relegation zone.

R&Z were co-hosts of the 4th and final match at York where the start was delayed due to a downpour. We needed to make every effort to avoid relegation. A full complement of track & field Officials was organised but again, only 8 athletes turned up. We were prepared for the worst. Only 3 regulars with John W away in Budapest, Hungary, competing in the 3rd World Throws Championships, but we had Chris, Robin and Richard, Karl Povey was back from exercise and we recruited Dave Woodcock as a replacement thrower to give the team some balance. It worked. Everybody threw and jumped, hurdled and ran their socks off. The match ran late because of the weather and team managers agreed to run the 4 x 400 relay before the javelin was complete in order to save time. The match hinged on the javelin result and could hardly have been closer - R&Z beat Bradford by just 4 match points to finish in 3rd place with Halifax in 5th, survival by ½ League point.

Next season is a long time away. We would love to have Maureen Powell back, recovered from her heart attack, back to manage us and bringing her decathlete son David with her. We do not know whether we will compete in NE or SE as the League may be reorganised again. We also need to continue lowering the average age of our athletes; more under 20s and less over 50s would naturally improve our League standing, bring us better competition and improve our athletes. Simple, isn’t it?

As well as the Northern Men’s League, many athletes have competed in NYSD and Open meetings where they may have set better marks - we can’t print what we don’t know - but a full list of best T&F marks from known competition will be available soonish.

Mike Brooks, acting T&F Manager

UNDER 17, 15 & 13 BOYS - RESULTS 2001

Macdonald’s League 2001

Having been promoted to Northern One East, we approached the first match with some trepidation, but the boys performed well and ended a creditable third. Sam Stanislaus, Nick Zissler and Peter Akers providing 47 points between them.

The second match was probably the toughest against the top clubs in the league and we came last scoring 40 points less than the first.

We resolved to do better in the third match and our effort to get more athletes in the Under 13 and under 17 groups paid off - thanks to Wendy. We won the match and started to get out of the relegation zone.

(continued)

Again, the U15 scored heavily 112 out of 177 total Philip Fitzpatrick bagging 16 along with Nick and Sam, while in the U 13 Andrew Lagan was making a name for himself along with two new recruits, James Ivory and Rex Jude, dropping only 2 points from maximum between them.

We now moved into the crunch time with two matches to go. The team was bolstered by the return of Matthew Baty, Ryan Livingstone and newcomer James Lawell in the U17’s, but missing Jude and Ivory. An exciting match ensued with R&Z going into the relays just 8 points in front of Wakefield. The boys held their nerve and beat them to win the match with a magnificent 177 points. The U17’s scored well with everyone getting into double figures with James Raper and Shane Murphy scoring 15 each. The last match was always going to be difficult with 10 of the team away on holiday the result showed this with only 1 point gained.

So we ended the season 9th in a league of 16 which considering the size of the club is a truly magnificent effort by all the boys. This is definitely a team effort with every member contributing fully to the result. This is borne out when you look at the margins by which we won our points. However mention can be made of the following who competed in all five matches with points gained in brackets: Peter Akers (57), Sam Stanislaus (63), Tom Gill (56), Matt Prosser (42), Shane Murphy (44), James Raper (41). We also gained Man of the Match awards in Match 1, Nick Zissler, and in Match 2, Rex Jude and Andrew Lagan.

Finally on a personal note may I thank Dan Brooks (who kept me sane), Mike Brooks (ace timekeeper), Wendy Nicholson and Heather Atkinson (our senior officials), Wendy Prosser (persuader and collator) Paula Akers and Faye Chilton along with all the other parents who assisted during the season, both on the field and ferrying the boys around.

Meanwhile other meetings, school and county competitions were taking place and the following results were obtained by our athletes. Andrew Lagan has had an excellent run of results at Barnsley and Carlisle. He ended up with two new Under 13 club records 2.16.1 in the 800 meters (having beaten it by one one-hundredth of a second earlier) and in the Long Jump with a leap of 4.52 meters. The 800 record has stood since 1986. Nick Zissler has finished a good run of 1500 meter races with an Under 15 club record of 4.15.67 at the English Schools Championships heats, finishing 4th in the final. This goes alongside his Yorkshire and Durham Schools Inter County wins.

PAUL ZISSLER (Cross Country Manager Boys)

VETERANS

There are two well-run Veteran Associations in our area, North East Vets and Yorkshire Vets.

The NE Vets only accept individual applications (including 5 Harriers at present) whereas Y Vets accept Club membership to which we subscribe annually.

There is also a different emphasis to each Association with NE Vets organising a Track & Field League and Y Vets organising a Road Race League, although both host Championship events in the other discipline plus Relays and Cross Country Championships.

The current "Roll of Honour" shows:

NE Vets X-C O55 Jim Robinson, Gold medal

NE Vets T&F O45 John Wild, 3 Gold medals, shot, discus & javelin

O55 Jim Robinson, 2 Gold medals, 1500m & 5000m

O40 Chris Peacock, Bronze medal, 800m

Y Vets T&F O45 John Wild, 4 Gold medals, hammer, shot, discus & javelin

O55 Jim Robinson, 2 Gold medals, 1500m & 5000m

O50 Mike Brooks, Gold medal, 400 hurdles

O40 Chris Peacock, Silver medal, 800m.

The 2001 Y Vets X-C Championships were cancelled due to the F&MD outbreak but are on the Fixture List for 2002.

All veteran athletes, males over 40 and females over 35, are welcome to compete; there are some fixtures on the Fixture List

ROAD RUNNING

The Club had a Senior Men’s team compete at South Leeds Stadium in the NoEAA 12 stage Road Relays for the 3rd consecutive year. Unfortunately, due to injury and illness, work and Bosnia, we lost 5 of our top 12 runners plus a few more further down the rankings and could only place 39th out of 42 finishing teams, 4 places down on our best showing at Silksworth in 2000. The over 50s/60s squad of Jim Robinson, Paul Zissler, Neil Piper, Ian Hepworth, myself and Bill Atkinson kept the tail wagging after the young ones, Dan Brooks, Scott Wardman and Robin Carter plus Ian Scott, Shaun Purkiss and Tony Colmer had got us halfway in great shape.

Special mention also goes to Rachel Robinson who ran the first stage of the Ladies 6 stage and finished in 10th place, less than a minute behind the race leaders.

Seven runners, Grete Buck, Ian Hepworth, Colin Sewell, Andy Whiteley, Darren Cox, Bill Simms and myself, took part in the London Marathon later in April. Most of us travelled by train and stayed in a "basic" hotel near Victoria Station along with a contingent of Ripon Runners. The primitive arrangements didn’t spoil an enjoyable weekend and a competitive race and most (if not all) will be back for more in 2002. Individual applications for entry need to reach the organisers by Friday 19th October and the Club hopes to have two places for rejected runners.

Before April was out, the Harrogate & District Road Race League was underway and our summer race schedule was in place. There was a good turnout in all sections, both male and female, seniors and veterans, but not good enough to challenge for team prizes. The best individual performance came from Rachel Robinson who won 2 of the 4 races she contested before her season was cut short by a stress fracture in her foot. For the men, Eric Williams journeyed south from work in Leith for the last race, our "home" fixture at Gilling West, finished 3rd and led the Harriers - to victory in the Open race and in The Angel later. Dan Brooks took the honour of most points earned away from Tony Colmer who had the consolation of a trophy for top male veteran over 45 and Jim Robinson would’ve done likewise for the over 55s but there isn’t a trophy for that category. Final standings saw the Club finish 3rd in the Open competition and 3rd in the Elite, 5th in the Male Vets, 7th in the Ladies and 9th (and last) in the Lady Vets.

Several Harriers competed in some or all of the end of summer road races. The Senior Men’s team of Mark Hawtin, Karl Povey and Shaun Purkiss won the team trophy at the Croft 10K and Andrea Woodvine finished 3rd Lady. Good times were set by many at the Harrogate and Darlington 10Ks, including Doug Howarth who has made a tremendous recovery after breaking his back in a fall near Easby less than 2 years ago. And Jim Robinson finally got a prize, winning a Fila sports bag for first male veteran over 55 at the Bishop Auckland 10K.

The highlight of the Great North weekend was Nick Zissler’s 24th place in the Junior Race over 3 miles, with James Raper 39th and both Philip Fitzpatrick and Carl Outhwaite in the top 200. Results of the GNR ½ Marathon aren’t known yet.

The next Club outing on the road for the men should be the NoEAA 6 stage Road Relays at Silksworth followed by the Richmond Castle 6 (although it clashes with the NYSD X-C fixture at Hartlepool) and the "Help the Aged" Leeds Abbey Dash 10K in December.

FELL RUNNING

There was an abbreviated season on the fells, during August and September, more specifically on Forest Enterprise land and paths above Guisborough, after the F&MD outbreak had diminished.

Several Harriers contested the 5 race series, the Guisborough Gambol, Gallump, Grunt, Gasp and uphill mile, more in a social vein than an athletic one, with a couple of pints of Guinness and a kebab being quite attractive after 7miles of hills, muck ‘n’ bullets.

The FR Winter season starts on Sunday 14th October with the Pinchinthorpe Plod, the first of eight proposed races with the best 6 results counting towards an unofficial championship.

JUNIOR/SENIOR/VETERAN MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY PREVIEW 2001-02

The Cross Country season is already upon us and it is time to dig out those muddy spikes!

The Club has entered Senior Men’s and Veteran Men’s teams in the Sunderland Open X-C Races and Relays on Saturday 22nd September. This is the earliest meeting of the new season, a fortnight before Skipton on Saturday 6th October, which unfortunately clashes with the NoEAA 6 stage Road Relays.

Darlington Harriers are hosting this year’s NYSD X-C Relays over a new course at Eastbourne School, adjacent to the new running track – first race probably at 1pm. Again we intend to turn out a full complement of teams, possibly including Junior Men, with Scott Wardman, individual winner of Youth’s section last year, moving up to join Dan Brooks, Richard Gibb, Chris Kendall and Robin Carter, a strong group – University excepted! The Senior Men’s team will be without Ian Scott, Paul O’Mahoney and Chris Peacock, who have all moved into the Vets, but Shaun Purkiss is racing well and has both Karl Povey and Mark Hawtin back from Bosnia to mount a challenge alongside the evergreen Sean Little, Wally Kinchin and newcomers, Shane Boulton and Tom Claffey. With three-quarters of the MVO40 team fresh into Veteran ranks, Tony Colmer will have a double-edged sword of teammates and competition. There are no new faces in the MVO50 team but if we can all keep fit ‘n’ well then, with myself, Mike Brooks, Paul Zissler, Colin Sewell, Ian Hepworth, Neil Piper, Martin Carter and Gerry Atkinson, we have quite a force.

The opening meeting in the NYSD X-C League will be over possibly the world’s boggiest course at Summerhill Park, Hartlepool, adjacent to the English Martyrs School, scene of last year’s second meeting and North East Counties Veteran’s Championships – first race at 1pm.

The Fixture List shows all the NYSD meetings – make a note on your calendar with a big asterisk against Sunday 13th January 2002, our home fixture at Richmond School.

When and wherever your X-C season starts, a good turnout will help the Club maintain their position in Division 1 and possibly improve on last year’s 8th place. Good luck and good running!

Jim Robinson, X-C Team Manager

FAREWELL ATHLETICS AND THANK YOU ATHLETES

After 54 years of following athletics, some of it as a competitor and 30 years of that period in coaching and administration with three different clubs I have decided to call it a day.

For the benefit of those who were not around when the Club started to grow and develop in 1983, which is most of you, I have drawn up a list of all time best female performances for different events extracted from over 2100 entries, and as you can see some were achieved many years ago. I have had the pleasure and privilege to coach many of them and although Fiona Hughes does not feature in the list she was the first junior in the Club and, fortunately, is one of the few who have not been lost to the sport despite advancing years!! My only regret is that for various reasons the majority on the list have been lost to the sport at too early an age. That has been, and still is the main problem with athletics not just in this Club but nationally ie talent wastage. Having said that it is good to see Rachel Robinson and Ruth Suffell still competing, the former on the come back trail.

Looking at the list, Kirsty Dodds (still competing in the south) and the Taylor sisters until they all left the area, and currently Andrea Woodvine would have been an asset to any Club in that all of them competed regularly and rarely missed a training session winter or summer, and the Taylors were sprinters.

Claire Oliver came to the Club from Darlington as a cross country/800/1500 runner but it soon became apparent that she could sprint. Her time of 41.2secs in the early days of 300m running was ranked 3rd in GB and was a Yorkshire record for several years. She was also the first R & Z female to gain her Yorkshire vest - for cross-country. Kirsty was the first female to be selected for the North of England cross-country team to compete in the inter-regional event in London. Until this year, Donna Riddler held the Club record for the 1500m. She was also the first Club athlete to gain selection for England having won the English Schools cross-country title. She went to the event as an "also ran". Both Alison Fletcher and Michelle Hillman were County standard endurance runners and were part of the winning team at the Yorkshire cross-country championships in 1989.

They then showed their talent with both being ranked nationally in the top 20 for the 400m hurdles, before the 300m event was introduced for under 17s. Very few females in the Club have achieved over 5m in the long jump and it is high time that Rebecca Blackwell's 1991 club record of 5.11m (done as an under 15) was broken. Currently only Helen Woodvine has got near it and Helen's 11.05m triple jump could be around for a while. Looking at the high jump I can see the 1.70m mark set by Debra McIlroy as an under 15 being there for many years. Her North of England Inter Counties record set in 1992 still stands - the previous record had been set before she was born! She was a marvellous talent who appears in these rankings in the sprint hurdles, long, high and triple jump, javelin and shot - 800m was definitely not to her liking !!

Two others from the "past" who readily come to mind are sprinters Steve Evans and Adam Barker both of whom gained County honours and were a pleasure to coach, and who helped me pass my senior coach exam as they were the " guinea pigs" for my practical.

Five years ago I was on the verge of "retiring" from coaching but the Club was not exactly well endowed with coaches so I refrained from hanging up whatever coaches hang up - probably stop watches, a decision I don't regret. Andrea Woodvine has been a catalyst for me having seen her win the Yorkshire cross country title as an under 15 and then come through a sticky patch for a couple of years to this year when she has set a PB in the 800m and broken the Club record for 1500m and 3000m, as well as being 50% (with Louise Jackson) of the winning under 20 Yorkshire cross country team at the inter counties in Nottingham. Talent alone has not achieved this - determination, hard work and good parental sport have helped. Many others would have gone into premature retirement.

Although gaining schools honours, I would like to have seen Amy Baines, Stephanie Goodall, Matthew Prosser, Emma Metcalfe and Laura McAlhone gain their Yorkshire vests in their respective events. All have been good fun and a pleasure to work with. When the list of over 2100 performances is studied, and having seen over 700 male and female athletes pass through this Club in the last 18 years, there are many others with whom I have enjoyed working, and those are only the ones in this Club. I have fond memories of the majority and thanks are due to all the parents who entrusted me with their offspring. Coaching young athletes is about communication and establishing a rapport not only with the athlete but also with the parents because without the support and confidence of the latter it can be a lost cause. There is a lot of talent out there, and the sport in general and the Club in particular needs it -- regrettably talent alone is not enough - hard work and determination are also required (90% perspiration and 10% inspiration) but at the end of the day it is very well worth it. Athletes, and coaches, will only get out of the sport what they are prepared to put into it. Hopefully the new level 1s will rise to the challenge and help the Club with its future development.

I wish the Club officers, athletes and coaches, all the best for the future.

In 1985 Claire Oliver was the first female Club member to gain her Yorkshire vest, which was for cross-country. She also represented Yorkshire as a 300m runner. She, along with Alison Fletcher, Donna Riddler and Andrea Woodvine are the only Club female athletes to gain County honours at both cross country and track & field, Andrea having gained selection on six occasions, twice in track & field and four times in cross country.

Other females not featured in the above rankings who have gained Yorkshire vests at cross country are Sophie Howard, Kate Connell, Barbara-Ann Sygmuta, Helen Darbyshire and Ashleigh Robinson and in track & field Emma Martin-Law (high jump) and Barbara-Ann Sygmuta (800m).
