Press Release 22nd March 2002Grete Buck of Richmond and Zetland Harriers ran in the Dentdale 14.3 mile Road Race on Saturday 9th March and wrote "the nearer Liz and I got to Dent the more convinced we became that the race would be cancelled, the snow blizzards were terrible but no, it was on. We all huddled in driving wind and sleet waiting for the gun - I didn't even hear it , I was just relieved to be moving!..a tough course with some hard hills between lots of undulations and huge pools of water. The weather improved later and I quite enjoyed the finish. Dentdale is beautiful and the village is quite unusual with very narrow cobbled streets and white painted houses...I'll be back next year, hopefully with better weather next." Grete, hard into London Marathon training, was 260th out of 339 who finished in 2:10:33, 46th out of 89 Ladies but there were no veteran declarations. Liz Sowter of Swaledale was 10th Lady in 1:48:17 and Neil Piper (in a social run with his ex-Club mates from Durham City Harriers) was 286th in 2:15:43.Grete followed Dent with an excursion to Redcar last Sunday, to run in the Half Marathon, and finished 1st LVO55 in 1:51:14. Again she had Liz for company until the gun went, Liz finished 212th in 1:36:18. Wes Hodgens and Dean Owens, RZH and ITC, were both a little disappointed to miss the 90 minute mark, finishing 134th and 185th in 91:09 and 94:19 respectively. They were both ahead of their soldier colleague Wull McLellan who was 280th in 1:40:28 but Wull did run in his army uniform with a 40 pound Bergen rucsac on his back!Last weekend was also the BVAF Indoor T&F Championships at Glasgow. Chris Peacock competed in the MVO40 400m on Saturday, finishing 9th fastest from the heats with a time of 60.2 and on Sunday was 5th in the 800m with 2:11.3. At the same Championships, Jill Harris, ex-RZH now running for Swindon, competed in and won the LVO40 1500m.There were nine younger Harriers competing in the Rotary 2 mile Fun Run around the Easby Loop at Richmond last Sunday. Philip Fitzpatrick, Scarlett Gray and Rosie Adams were winners of trophies for their respective classes; Jo Adams, Georgina Zissler, Lianne Broadfoot, Katie Roberts, Miles Metcalfe and Jessica Gray also competed. Look out for a comprehensive report with full results, a list of prizewinners and photographs.
