Press Release 9th April 2002 - Open Track and Field Meet Carlisle

Earlier this year, Richmond and Zetland Harriers had two younger athletes reach the qualifying standards in order to compete in the Northern Indoor Track & Field Championships at Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield. In the Championships, Matt Prosser set a PB (personal best) in the under 17 boys 60m, finishing 4th in his heat in 7.78. Sam Stanislaus set PBs in both his events; finishing 2nd and winning the silver medal in the under 15 boys triple jump with 11m11 and 4th in the shot putt with 10m58.

Competition has now moved outdoors and, in the absence of the Cyril Elliott Open T&F Meet, several Harriers journeyed to Carlisle on Easter Sunday, in search of early-season marks. The Open Graded Medals Meeting hosted by Aspatria AC attracted athletes representing 21 Clubs from Cumbria, Yorkshire, the North East counties and Scotland. The Harriers returned with 13 medals - 4 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze - plus several PBs. The first highlight came in the under 13 girls 800m when Jessica Gray strode clear of the pack to win in a PB 2:39.5. Philip Fitzpatrick followed suit in the under 15 boys 800m, leading from the gun, dominating the race and winning in 2:16.0. Then, not to be outdone by the big 'uns, Rebecca Shaw won double gold; winning the under 9 girls 600m in 2:18.1 and then the 150m in 25.8. Not to be over-looked, Sam Stanislaus continued his silver medal collection with another three from three events, the best being a leap of 5m23, which added 7centimeters to his long jump PB.

The Gray twins enjoyed their outing to Carlisle so much that they went back for the Border Harriers Open T&F Meeting last Sunday (the day after their disco party - Happy Birthday Girls!) and came home with three more medals. Jessica won silver in the under 13 girls 800m; Scarlett won silver in the 75m hurdles and then gold in the 1500m with a winning time of 5:36.0.

A little further afield, Andrea Woodvine was in Paris with Nottingham University to compete in the "Relay Central", an invitation relay race amongst the World's best Universities. Having recovered from injury sustained in the Northern X-C Championships, Andrea was happy to be back in competition and completed her 3K leg in about 12 minutes.
