Hambledon and Richmondshire Area Schools Athletics Trials 3rd May 2002Thirty five present and former members of Richmond and Zetland Harriers competed in the Hambleton and Richmondshire Area (Schools) Athletics Trials at Clairville Stadium, Middlesbrough on Friday 3rd May. With the top three in each event qualifying to compete in the North Yorkshire Schools Championships there were several outstanding performances. In the Junior Girls, Amy Poulter qualified for the high jump and shot and both year 7 twins, Scarlett and Jessica Gray for the 1500m and 800m respectively. Laura McAlhone was the pick of the Inter Girls with wins at 100m and 200m although Emma Metcalfe qualified for three events, 80m hurdles, long jump and triple jump. Heptathlete Kim Bartram was another convincing winner with success in the Senior Girls 400m and long jump. There were four Junior Boys each earning their places in two events: Peter Akers, 200m and triple jump; Tom Gill, 400m and discus; Andy Lagan, 800m and long jump and Sam Stanislaus high jump and shot. Matt Prosser won the Inter Boys 100m and Scott Wardman won the Senior Boys 3000m.Click for RZH ResultsYorkshire County Track and Field Championships 11th-12th May 2002The Yorkshire County T&F Championships were held at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium, Barnsley over the weekend of the 11th/12th May. The Harriers had twenty six athletes in competition and came away with six medals - five for the Under 15 boys; Sam Stanislaus with gold in the high jump and silver in the long jump plus bronzes for Peter Akers in the high jump, Philip Fitzpatrick in the 800m and Carl Outhwaite in the hammer and a silver for Louise Jackson in the Senior Ladies 1500m.Click for RZH resultsBMC Meeting 14th May 2002Three Harriers journeyed to Longford Park Stadium, Stretford on Tuesday 14th for their second BMC meeting. James Wardman continued to improve with a 1:56 clocking in the 800m, Dan Brooks won his "B" race in 2:06 and Ken Harker placed 3rd in the 1500m with 4:03.Northern Counties Combined Events Championships 18th May 2002Last weekend the Northern Counties Combined Events Championships were held at Hexham. Sam Stanislaus showed that practice makes perfect - his collection of wins and PB performances in Open Meets, Schools Trials and County Championships added-up to a winning performance in the Under 15 Boys Pentathlon. His marks were long jump 4m98, equalled his PB in high jump with 1m65, shot putt 10m84, ran a PB 13.05 in the 80m hurdles and knocked more than 3 seconds from his PB in the 800m with 2:29.5 for a 2343 points total. Rebecca Rennison also competed in her first multi-events competition and set good marks in the 75m hurdles, shot putt and high jump before being forced to retire with a sore hamstring.Thirsk 10 Mile and BMC Standards SeriesThe Thirsk 10 mile Road Race on Sunday 19th was won by Dominic Bannister of Shaftesbury Barnett Harriers in a time of 50.12, 45 seconds faster than last years winning time by Ian Fisher of Otley but a tantalising 13 seconds away from breaking the 50 minute barrier which wouldve earned him a £250 bonus on top of his £250 first prize. Jon Orange and Karl Povey of RZH both made the top ten; Jon was fourth in 54.10 and Karl tenth in 57.16.The BMC Standards Series moved to the Monkton Stadium at Jarrow on Monday last. Ken Harker and James Wardman competed in the 1500m with Ken finishing 6th in 4:02 and James 8th in 4:07. Kens consistency has earned him his first Yorkshire vest; called into the Inter-Counties team to compete over a mile at Bedford this weekend. |
