Inter-Counties Track and Field Saturday 22nd June 2002

Inter-Counties matches follow the County Schools Championships to give the athletes meaningful competition and allow the Selectors to fine-tune their thoughts for the English Schools T&F Championships.

The Co Durham team took-on Cleveland and Cumbria on Saturday 22nd, again at Monkton Stadium. Georgina Zissler was 4th in the 200m in 28.5 and then ran in the winning 4x100m relay team which clocked 51.6 seconds. Nick placed 2nd in the 1500m with a pb time of 4:14.7, fast enough to earn him selection for the English Schools.

North Yorkshire Schools also competed in an Inter-Counties match on Saturday 22nd, against Humberside and Lincolnshire at Quibell Park, Scunthorpe. Fourteen Harriers were chosen to compete and several won their events with good heights, times and distances.

Fell Races and Brugge 10K.

Away from the track and onto the fells, Gary Bastow has returned to competition after a lengthy absence. Although not quite back to the heady standards which saw him both win and set course records in the Swaledale Marathon and the Shunner Shuffle, he is already making his mark. Competing in the BOFRA series, with the best 12 results from up to 20 races counting, Gary has scored points in three to date: Cray, 16th & 5th Vet; Coniston Gullies, 10th & 3rd Vet and last Sunday Helm Hill, 14th & 4th Vet.

Also on Sunday 23rd, Eric Williams ran in the Brugge 10K finishing 2nd in 32:55. This is likely to be the last running of the 29 years-old traditional Veterans only race as the Organiser has retired and there is no one willing to take it on. This year was not a Championship year, those races were held in Italy in May. The Brugge race has been a favourite among British Vets for years and this years field was no exception with hundreds of them making up 90% of the field. The course is along country roads, extremely flat, and finishes in the FC Brugge football stadium. Eric got off to a reasonable start, closed down on the runners ahead after about a mile, went into 2nd at halfway (16.52) but wasn't able to close on the eventual winner Paul Muller (32.03) despite a negative split, running the second half faster than the first.
