Catching-up with athletics results from the past several weeks; Richmond and Zetland Harriers have had competition in the Young Athletes League, the North Yorkshire South Durham League, the Northern Men's League and, perhaps most importantly, Grete's Birthday Run.Young Athletes League 30th June 2002RZH compete in North Division One East of the YAL (boys) and competed against fifteen other Clubs from Cleethorpes to Hexham, once each, over the course of five matches. Match four was held on Sunday 30th June at the King George V Stadium, Cleethorpes, against League leaders Morpeth and Barnsley but Shildon failed to turn-up. Each athlete can only compete in three events plus the relay(s). The Harriers started with just ten athletes and when Matt Baty pulled a hamstring whilst winning his B-string long jump and Nick Zisslers old knee injury flared-up, the writing was on the wall. Philip Fitzpatrick won his 400m in a PB 58.5; Sam Stanislaus won his high jump and Aaron Shaw won both his javelin and 100m hurdles but the team finished third and is now fourth from bottom - in the relegation zone! The fifth and last match is this Sunday at Jarrow and a good result could see them safe - competition starts at 1.00 pm, contact Paul Zissler or Wendy Prosser for team arrangements.RZH results:NYSD Track and Field Meeting Clairville 2nd JulyThe fourth and last NYSD track & field meeting on Tuesday 2nd July at Clairville Stadium, Middlesbrough had the biggest turnout of the summer. RZH highlights included Scarlett Gray and James Wardman winning their 1500m races, Becky Rennison winning her high jump and Katie Roberts winning her shot putt.RZH results:Northern Mens League Knockout Plate 14th July 2002The Junior/Senior/Veteran Men competed in the NML Knockout Plate on Sunday 14th July at Eastbourne Track, Darlington. The Harriers had three key men missing but their mixture of young and not-quite-so-young athletes, exuberance and experience, was enough to earn them second place behind New Marske and a place in the Final on Sunday 25th August at Barnsley. The busiest man was Dan Brooks who competed in the maximum five individual events, winning the 400m hurdles, plus both relays. Jon Orange continued his winning sequence on the track with a win in the 10,000m but could only manage a bronze medal for third place in the accompanying North East Counties Championships behind international Stewy Bell of Chester-le-Street and Michael Thompson of Gateshead. There were middle distance wins for John Aspell and James Wardman, a triple jump win for Aaron Shaw and a win for the 4 x 400m relay team.RZH results:Grete's Birthday Run 16th July 2002. The latest outing for the Harriers was on Tuesday 16th July to celebrate Grete Buck's 60th birthday. Twenty-five runners from Richmond, Swaledale, Ripon and Hartlepool met with more of her friends at the Bolton Arms, Redmire for a little-longer-than-five mile race, out and back, through wonderful Wensleydale. A group of five was together past the half-way point before the pace hotted-up and Dave Cardus proved the strongest to come home first, just ahead of Richard Johnson and Tony Colmer. Louise Jackson was first Lady, pipping team-mate Rachel Robinson by just twenty seconds. Everybody earned a goodie-bag, filled with Grete's choice of Danish delights, and everyone was a winner with the spread laid-on. |
