NYSD Track & Field Shildon 20th May 2003

The increase in numbers of athletes who competed in the second meeting of the re-vamped NYSD T&F League, held at Stadium 2000, Shildon on Tuesday 20th May, has justified the efforts of the organisers. A total of 154 athletes from 12 Clubs, including 21 from Richmond and Zetland Harriers, competed in the three-hour programme of track and field events. The re-vamped format gives the athletes competitive opportunities outside of NML, NWL or YAL; an opportunity to gain a qualifying time or distance for School or County Championships plus the twin incentives of individual Championship medals and end-of-season Team trophies.

The shot was the designated Championship event at Shildon and the eight individual age-group medal winners were: U13G F.Buckton, M&C; U13B J.Crawley, Teesdale; U15G R.Carter, Quakers; U15B D.Bainbridge, Billingham Marsh House (BMH); U17L A.Snook, Quakers; U17M Sam Stanislaus, RZH; Junior/Senior/Veteran Ladies E.McLelland, Hartlepool Burn Road (HBR) and Junior/Senior/Veteran Men W.Farquharson, BMH.

In addition to Sam Stanislaus winning the shot with a put of 10m03, the Harriers had six more event winners and seven second places. The female winners began with Leanne Shaw who ran a season’s best 14.2 in the U13G 100m, Jessie Roberts finished first in a Club 1-2-3-4 in the U15G 600m in 1:47.4 and Georgina Zissler was absolutely delighted with her 44.1 clocking in the U17L 300m, inside the qualifying time or distance for the English Schools Championships. The Club’s male winners were led by Jason Flannery, Yorkshire U15B 1500m Champion, moving-up a distance to win the 3000m in 10:21.2, Jon Orange winning the Junior/Senior/Veteran Men’s race over the same distance in 9:14.2 and Sam Stanislaus scoring double-top on the night with 1m55 in the high jump.

As a result of their efforts, the Club’s females were team winners on the night with 67 match points ahead of Quakers and Shildon with 46 and 42 points respectively, and the males were second with 70 match points, a massive 33½ points behind BMH, but 18 ahead of M&C and Shildon who shared third place. The match points give positions that in turn give League points and positions and, after two meetings, the Harriers are on top with 44 League points.
