Northern Senior Track & Field Hexham 5th June 2004Sixteen athletes from Richmond and Zetland Harriers contested the second Northern Senior T&F League fixture at Tynedale Athletics Park, Hexham on Saturday 5th and the seven females won their corner and outscored their nine male counterparts again. A bright and sunny afternoon was conducive to good athletics and the female’s 150 point total included 5 A-string and 11 B-string wins from the 15 individual events plus a first in the 4 x 100m relay. Louise Jackson was top girl, the biggest points scorer with 33 from A-string wins in the 800m and 400m, B-string wins in the 100m, discus and 200m plus 3rd place in the A-string javelin. Fiona Hughes was a close runner-up with 30 points from 6 events, including an A-string win in the 400m hurdles. Kim Bartram was third with 24 points from 4 events; an all A-string girl, she had wins in the long jump and 100m hurdles and was second in both sprints. Sharon Powell contested 5 events and improved her season’s best in three out of four throws. Erica Moks and Sarah Gregory both competed in four events: Erica’s highlight was her fourth PB in four outings over 1500m; Sarah knocked a second off her 3000m time and made her debut in the hammer and shot. Shirley Mathurin made her debut on the track, in the 3000m, and was delighted to break 15 minutes. The men’s excuse for scoring a mere 109 points was that there was “considerably more competition” and the fact that former international decathlete Richard Hunter of host Club, Tynedale Harriers, was beaten in 2 of his 7 events bears this out. Matt Prosser of RZH was one of his conquerors, winning the A-string 400m hurdles and this, together with a B-string win in the 400m, helped him to 23 points and top man on the day! Ryan Livingstone was next-best-man with 19 points and third place was tied by Team Manager, Chris Peacock and Scott Wardman with 12 points each, with Scott setting a PB to win the A-string 1500m. Ken Harker was another busy runner, competing in the 200m, 400m and 800m. Edd Richards contested two events, the discus and the 1500m, and has a choice of long, high or triple to earn his RZH (runs, jumpz & throws) badge! Jon Orange and Eric Williams did the double in the 5000m, winning A and B strings respectively, with Jon claiming the scalps of Stewy Bell and Peter Embleton in the process. Mike Brooks was ninth man and, competing in the 3000m steeplechase, was less than 4 seconds away from his goal of breaking 12 minutes.
