Leyburn Leisure Club 6 mile RR 13th June 2004

Missing from last week’s Richmond and Zetland Harriers round up (due to your correspondent’s oversight) was mention of Tony Hewson. After several week’s upheaval, moving business and family from The Stabledoor Restaurant to The Priory Guesthouse in Middleham, and minimal training since the London Marathon, Tony finished 2nd in the Leyburn Leisure Club 6 mile Road Race on Sunday 13th in about 42 minutes.

Schools Track & Field Cup

Also missing were details of The Allertonshire School’s success in the TSB sponsored Schools T&F Cup. Two Harriers were part of the School’s Junior Girl’s team who were runaway winners at the County stage at Huntington Stadium, York, in May and who won the North East regional final on Monday 14th June at Gateshead International Stadium. Rosie Adams competed in the 800m and the discus; Ruth Hill competed in the 100m and the long jump; both competed well to earn points for the team. They will now compete at Gateshead on 3rd July against twelve other top school teams in the National final. Three other teams from the School were also entered in the competition: the Inter Girls, with Jo Adams and Katie Roberts, were clear winners at York and finished a close second at Gateshead; the Inter and Junior Boys, with Shane Darby and Douglas Roberts, were also winners at York but finished 3rd and 4th respectively at Gateshead and didn’t make the Final line up.

NYSD Track & Field Meeting , Catterick Garrison 15th June 2004

RZH hosted the third of this summer’s NYSD T&F fixtures on Tuesday 15th at Catterick Garrison Stadium, the first fixture under UK:Athletics Rules for Competition since the all-weather track was laid and the facilities upgraded. More than 200 athletes of all ages and both genders took part, large numbers from Middlesbrough & Cleveland, Billingham Marsh House, Darlington and Richmond, all spurred-on by the thought of setting Stadium records. Star on the night was Kate Avery of Shildon who won the Under 13 Girls 800m in a time of 2:33.2, a Grade 2 performance. The Harriers managed fifteen winners: four out of five categories in the 100m - Ruth Hill U13G, Sophie Broadway U15G, Georgina Zissler U17W and Fiona Hughes SW; Nick Zissler U17M, Scott Wardman SM and Louise Jackson SW in the 800m; Carl Outhwaite U20M, Taff Rogers M40 and Mike Brooks M50 in the 2000m steeplechase; Tom Walker U13B in the long jump; Naomi Moks U13G, Matt Prosser U20m and John Wild M50 in the shot put and Fiona Hughes (again) in the triple jump. Despite individual successes, the Club lost ground on their competitors in team competition: the Females finished 3rd behind BMH and M&C, who finished 1st and 2nd in both Male and Female categories, and Darlington pushed the Males into 4th place. The standings after three fixtures show the females 2nd with 33 points, 2 points behind BMH, and the Males still 5th, now with 25 points, and equal 3rd with Darlington in the combined table.

Race for Life Darlington, 20th June 2004

The Tesco sponsored “Race for Life” was also on Sunday 20th at South Park, Darlington; Grete Buck and Lisa Lloyd were two Harriers amongst the thousands who took part. Lisa commented “amazing!…I definitely have the bug now and can't wait to race again…I would have been happy to make it around in under 30 minutes, but ended up doing 25.55...not so bad bearing in mind that I only started training 9 weeks ago…I started very far back in the field, which gave me the psychological advantage of overtaking rather than being overtaken, but next time I'll have to start a bit further to the front, because I think I lost quite a lot of time and energy weaving in and out to overtake”.
