Harrogate Road Race League Richmond 8th July 2004

The fifth and last scoring race in this year’s Midweek League was hosted by Swaledale Road Runners on Thursday 8th. The race started from The Fosse Car Park and followed the route of the popular Richmond Castle 10K for the most part, to Catterick Garrison and back via Holly Hill twice and finishing on The Batts. Any thoughts that Ian Fisher’s reputation was on the line, having raced and won the Helen Windsor 10K in Halifax the night before, evaporated when he made his customary dash from the start to dominated proceedings and finish over a minute ahead of Alan Stimpson in 27:28. The Harriers had 14 runners toe the line, a best-of-season turnout to enjoy the hilly course, and with Scott Wardman and Ken Harker finishing in 3rd and 4th places respectively, they came within a whisker of winning the Elite, the Open and the Male Veteran’s team races on the night.

RZH results: 3rd Scott Wardman 29:14, 4th Ken Harker 29:34, 19th (& 2nd M40) Ian Scott 32:34, 20th (& 3rd M40) Paul Roberts 32:39, 25th (& 2nd M55) Mike Brooks 33:08, 26th Taff Rogers 33:22, 33rd Chris Peacock 33:43, 36th Derek Philips 34:00, 37th Chris Lamb 34:07, 39th (& 10th counter) Jim Robinson 34:19, 56th (but still on the first page of results) Shaun Purkiss 36:12, 81st Neil Piper 38:57, 93rd Sarah Gregory 40:10 and 154th Shirley Mathurin 49:40.

Despite this final flourish, the Club were “marmalised” in the team races with best places 5th in the Elite, 6th in the Vets and 8th in the Open, finishing the season in 8th place with a massive 38 points and behind our home-town rivals in all five categories. Congratulations go to Ilkley Harriers who finally unseated Otley as top team scoring just 11 points from the five categories with 2 wins (in the Ladies and Lady Vets) and 3 third places.
