Harrogate Midweek League Handicap - Ripon 21st July 2004
Mike Brooks Receiving M50 Trophy
 |
The following day, 6 Harriers toed the line in the Midweek League Handicap Race at Ripon Cricket Club. The tried and trusted format saw a genuine race with each runner’s start time based on results from a minimum 2 of the previous 5 scoring races and this was borne out by 80% of the runners finishing within 4 minutes of each other before the printing stopwatch ran out of paper. Sue Smith of Swaledale and Dave Dowson of Ripon had the honour of being first runners away at 7:25:00; Blaise Ter Har of Swaledale was first home, a little more than an hour later at 8:28:33, having run the course in 49:33 off a 14 minute handicap; Ian Fisher of Otley was fastest on the night, finishing the 10K multi-terrain course in 31:39, in 55th place having a handicap of 34:30.
RZH results: 17th Ian Scott 8:29:59 - 7:52:30 (27:30) = 37:29, 21st Taff Rogers 8:30:07 - 7:52:00 (27:00) = 38:07, 102nd Neil Piper 8:32:14 - 7:45:30 (20:30) = 46:44, 107th Ian Hepworth 8:32:21 - 7:47:00 (22:00) = 45:21, 133rd Phil Hill and 142nd Mike Brooks, dead last and too slow to be recorded!
After the prize giving for the Handicap Race, there were the League presentations - commemorative mugs for all who contested four or more races and trophies for the winners. Although the Club was outshone in all the team categories, Mike Brooks followed in the footsteps of Bill Atkinson and Jim Robinson and picked up the individual shield for top M50.
A Foot in Two Dales (Run-Walk) 17th July 2004
9.00 am Saturday 17th and 184 walkers and runners made an unusual start to the weekend and there were 4 Richmond and Zetland Harriers amongst them. The Cleveland Long Distance Walkers Association “A foot in Two Dales”, a 50 mile off-road event started from Harmby Village Hall, near Leyburn, in wet and windy conditions more akin to March than July. Jim Robinson and Alex Whiteside both put their “best feet forward” and despite Jim taking one or two tumbles enroute, they finished together in 17th place in 10 hours 52 minutes. Neil and Liz Piper were more intent on “a good day out” and, although their endeavours were more civilised than athletic, they finished 58th in 13 hours 47 minutes - together, of course.
Young Athletes League 18th July 2004
On Sunday 18th, the younger athletes competed at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium, Cudworth against Scunthorpe, Houghton & Peterlee and Dearneside in their 4th YAL fixture. In a change from previous fixtures, the Club had enough athletes in three of the six gender age groups for relay teams and with their usual brave performances (more than three quarters finishing in first or second place), they closed the points gap considerably. Jo Adams was number one Harrier on the day, winning all three individual A-string events contested, javelin, discus and 1500m and running a leg of the winning relay team. More individual A-string wins came for Ruth Hill in the 70m hurdles, for Rosie Adams in the 800m, for Sean Osborn in the 400m and Phil Fitzpatrick in the 1500m. There were equally positive performances from Lily Cuthbert, Matthew Brown and William Grimshaw, who will all make fine athletes judging by their Track and Field League debuts
RZH results: Under 13 Girls - Lily Cuthbert 800m 2:58.2 & long jump 3m35; Ruth Hill 70m hurdles 14.0, 150m 22.0 & long jump 3m53; Naomi Moks shot 6m11, 75m 12.4 & 150m 24.9; Alice Morrison shot 5m02, 75m 12.2 & 70m hurdles 15.2; 4 x 100m relay 62.6: Under 13 Boys - Matthew Brown 100m 17.3, 800m 3:16.6 & shot 4m54; William Grimshaw 800m 3:08.2, shot 5m67 & 200m 36.2; Tom Osborn long jump 3m41, 200m 32.8 & 1500m 5:14.6; Rory Wadsworth 100m 15.2, long jump 3m43 & 1500m 6:03.6; 4 x 100m relay 66.3: Under 15 Girls - Jo Adams javelin 14m91, discus 24m80 & 1500m 5:25.3; Rosie Adams 800m 2:35.5, javelin 10m37 & discus 15m85; Sophie Broadway 100m 13.8; Leanne Shaw 100m 14.6, long jump 4m32 & 200m 31.1; Jane Thornton 800m 2:43.0, shot 5m31 & 75m hurdles 16.2; 4 x 100m relay 53.9: Under 17 Boys - Philip Fitzpatrick 3000m 10:05.6, shot 7m01 & 1500m 4:39.2; Sean Osborn 400m 55.7, shot 7m92 & 200m 25.1.
With one fixture remaining, the Club look destined for a return to Division 2 but if all the athletes respond to their Coaches and Manager next season then, with the encouragement of “new blood”, promotion will not a pipe dream.
