Fiona Hughes chosen as a winner in the North Yorkshire Coach & Volunteer Awards
It is always a pleasure to be nominated for an award by your peers, in this case fellow Coaches from Richmond and Zetland Harriers, and it is then doubly pleasurable to be chosen as a winner.
Earlier this year, North Yorkshire Sport (NYS) asked for nominations for Coach and Volunteer Awards, to be put forward to the NYS Conference on Sunday 10th April at Ampleforth College, Ryedale, which included the Coach of the Year Awards.

NYS is a County-wide Sports Partnership that was set up in 1998 to deliver on the Active Sports programme and the Youth Games. Danny Thompson, Sports Development Officer in Hambleton said “sporting excellence in North Yorkshire is to be celebrated…we have a host of clubs, all working hard to develop a wide range of sports and coaches are one of the greatest assets we have for developing sporting opportunities in our communities…they give hours of dedication to the various clubs, often voluntarily, to help people of all ages and abilities develop their skills…it is only right that we recognise their achievements with these awards."
The Conference was open to sports clubs, coaches, committees, teachers and volunteers alike, to recognise and celebrate the work of clubs, coaches and volunteers in North Yorkshire. Attendees were given the opportunity to learn about contemporary developments in sport, network with other key sports providers as well as the opportunity to attend a number of workshops including the FUNdamentals of movement, Developing sporting partnerships & junior clubs and analysing your coaching amongst others.
Rebecca Skinner, Sports Development Officer for NYS and organiser of the event added “sports coaches and volunteers are integral to the development of sporting opportunities within the community…they offer many hours of dedication and commitment beyond what is expected, to help people of all ages and abilities to reach their potential and enjoy the gift of sport…we have recognised this and wish to raise the awareness of their efforts through these awards and ultimately say thank you.”
Nominations were sought in seven categories: Male Community Coach; Female Community Coach; Coach of Disabled Performers, Young Community Coach; Sports Volunteer; Young Sports Volunteer; and Club of the Year. There were literally hundreds of nominations from sports club members, fellow coaches, players, parents, teachers and more, including Fiona Hughes of RZH, nominated by fellow Coaches, Julie Roberts and Faye Chilton. The awards were supported by Sport England, Sports Coaches UK and NYS; Fiona was chosen as the winner in the Female Community Coach category and received a Thistle cut glass obelisk, engraved with her name and award details. The Club celebrated the award at training on Tuesday last, knowing that a special person had been recognised for her energy, enthusiasm and dedication, not only by her athletes but also by the sport as a whole.
