Fellsman Hike/Ultra-Run 14-15th May 2005
Neil on his day off
 |
Neil Piper has probably been the busiest Harrier in recent weeks in a slightly less orthodox athletics discipline - ultra-distance running. Not since the days when Bob Jones ran 24 and 12-hour track races, and ran similar distances in training, has the Club had a man excel in this arena. Neil writes “I was 23rd out of 219 starters in the Fellsman Hike on 14th/15th May. The winner, as usual, was Mark Hartell of Macclesfield Harriers in 10:15 (not bad for 60 miles and 11000 feet of ascent) but he is the Ian Fisher of the long distance world. Second place took 12:19, over 2hours longer, and there were 9 inside 15 hours. I was pleased with my time of 18:05; it was 3 hours faster than last year although much of that is due to last year’s awful conditions. I was beaten by 2 women; one of them was Sarah Rowell in 15:31 but her best marathon time is about half an hour faster than mine so that's alright. There were 172 finishers with the last man in 28:58. Since then I have done the Rugger Ramble (25 miles 2,300 feet) on 4th June in 6:ll and the Ulfkil Stride (24 miles, 4000feet) on 11th June in 6:25, both with Liz and both mostly walking.”
Harrogate Road League - Richmond 7th June 2005
On Tuesday 7th, the Club hosted race 3 in the Harrogate & District Summer Road Race League, the Pond Dale 5 from Gilling West. Road running is enjoying an upturn in popularity, possibly the Paula-effect, and there have been big fields with race limits reached early at several venues recently. The League is no exception, there were record numbers of finishers at the first two fixtures and 208 finishers at Gilling was a better turnout than in previous years. It was a fine night, both weather-wise and athletically, and predictably Ian Fisher of Otley notched-up another victory, front-running the accurate 5-mile course in 25:13. He was followed home, 42 seconds later, by local lad Jon Orange, first M40 again making it three out of three in the League to date. Rachel Ross Russell was on holiday in May and missed the first race but has subsequently made-up for her absence, her 17th place overall was 1st Woman by 20 places and almost 2 minutes, and two wins out of three puts her in pole position in the League. RZH results: 2nd (& 1st M40) Jon Orange 25:55, 15th (& 3rd M40) Shaun Purkiss 28:56, 17th (& 1st Woman) Rachel Ross Russell 29:11, 23rd (& 5th M40) Ian Scott 29:50, 45th (& 3rd M55) Mike Brooks 31:32, 48th Chris Peacock 31:41, 78th Paula Copeland 34:54, 82nd Sarah Gregory 35:09, 122nd Erica Moks 38:13, 174th Shirley Mathurin 42:38 and 177th Louise Foster 43:01. On the day, the team were 6th in the Open race, 3rd in the Elite, 3rd Women and 1st Veteran Men and overall are 8th, 2nd, 9th and 2nd with two more races to score.
