Harrogate Road Race League - Harrogate 5th July 2005

In a congested race week with four events in two days, the fifth race in the Harrogate & District Summer Road Race League was on the same night, and several Harriers opted-out of the Road Race with unforeseen but disastrous consequence. Having implemented a new scoring system to count the best four results from five races, it was only realised when the final scores were tallied that this was for teams as well as individuals and the Club had missed the opportunity to win the Veteran Men’s trophy and bring the Bill Atkinson Shield back home. Nonetheless, it was a good, long race over a new course, 5.9 miles on a fine night, well organised by host Club Harrogate with a fine spread to fit the occasion. Ian Fisher was the race winner again and has kept the individual Men’s trophy and, with seven in eleven, Otley did more than enough to win both the Open and Elite team trophies. Top Harrier on the night was Rachel Ross Russell who made sure of the individual Woman’s trophy with her fourth consecutive win, finishing 17th overall, 28 places and more than 2 minutes ahead of the runner-up Erika Johnson of Swaledale, and leading the Women’s team to 2nd on the night, less than 23 points behind the winners, Ilkley. RZH results 17th (& 1st Woman) Rachel Ross Russell 34:40, 53rd (& 3rd Woman) Andrea Woodvine 37:31, 67th Taff Rogers 38:44, 102nd Sarah Gregory 42:03, 110th Neil Piper 42:36, 121st Paula Copeland 43:42 & 169th Louise Foster 49:47 from 211 finishers. The overall results show the Harriers finishing runners-up in both the Veteran Men’s and Elite teams and 6th in the Women’s team, all improvements on last year’s endeavour, but only 7th in the Open team category.

10K Road Race - Croft 6th July 2005

Shaun - Jon - Paul

The following night, with a 10K road race at Croft and a 5K at New Marske, the choice was relatively simple and five Harriers lined-up for the Pit Stop 10K. Jon Orange was the class act in the 94 strong field, his runaway victory in damp and breezy conditions made it four wins in five days - the previous Saturday he did a 1500m/5000m double in the NSL and he shaved 4/10ths of a second off his season’s best 1500m time in winning his NYSD race the night before. RZH results: 1st Jon Orange 32:31, 5th Shaun Purkiss 37:16, 9th Paul Roberts 38:35, 13th (& 2nd M55) Mike Brooks 39:06 & 47th Ian Hepworth 46:01. The result of the team race caused a considerable amount of discussion as both RZH and Darlington finished with 15 points and, contrary to UK Athletics rules, the Harrier’s third finisher was not wearing a Club vest, but the host Club were magnanimous and awarded the prize to the Harriers on countback.

English Schools Track & Field Championships - Birmingham 8th-9th July 2005

The English Schools T&F Championships were at The Alexander Stadium, Birmingham for two days starting on Friday 8th and the two Harriers selected to represent North Yorkshire were both rewarded for their hard work. Lindsey Johnson competed in the Inter Girls javelin and finished 8th – that’s eighth best in the whole of England! with a best throw of 34m99, just 51cm down on her PB in less than ideal conditions. Leanne Shaw ran in the Junior Girls 200m and although she finished 5th in her heat and didn’t progress, she ran 26.17, a PB and a new Club record!

Highland Games Fell Race - Alva

Highlands - Where is Gary?

Gary Bastow rounds-off this week’s results with a magnificent 8th place finish in the Fell Race at the Highland Games at Alva, Clackmannanshire. Injury had curtailed the start of his British Open Fell Runners Association (BOFRA) season and this was only his second race. Gary writes “the Highland Games themselves are a brilliant day out and so is the race, it is so steep…I don't know what I was doing (setting off so quickly) and was just hanging-in, behind the leaders and was 7th at the top, ahead of Bashir Hussain of Stockport and he’s got a GB vest…thankfully, he didn't have the know-how on descending and, although I lost one place on the way down, I ended-up knocking 2½ minutes off my time.” Gary now leads the M45 category in the BOFRA and is hoping his injury problems are behind him, as he needs to complete all the remaining races.
