Richard Hunt's recent activities

Richard Hunt has had a busy summer season in triathlon and has achieved his twin aims - to qualify for the World Championships and to defend his National title. Having wintered well and posted good marks in all three disciplines, his first competition was the World Championship Qualifiers, in June, in Shropshire where he finished 2nd overall from about 740 competitors, only 13 seconds the winner, and made the team for Hawaii. The Bournemouth International, which incorporated the Army Championships, was next on 3rd July and, despite “starting tired and having a bad race”, he finished 7th overall from almost 1000 competitors. Two weeks later, Rich competed at Ashford, Kent, and successfully defended the National title he won at Liverpool last year in the 30 to 35 age category. Rich’s last competition was the York Grand Prix Duathlon (run 10K, bike 40K and run 5K) where he finished 1st overall from 330 entries and recorded the fastest split on all three disciplines 34:10, 1:03 and 16:44. Army responsibilities then interrupted competition for four weeks, until Tuesday 2nd, when he ventured north to compete in the Morpeth 10K and “came 2nd in 33:43, about 40 seconds down on a chap called Swinburne of Morpeth…it was windy, it was a poor race and I was slow although a £40 voucher made it a worth while trip.”

BOFRA Series Cracoe 31st July 2005

Gary Bastow is also enjoying continued success on the Fells, despite being second in the M45 category at Cracoe on Sunday 31st July (pipped by a man called Speight who hadn’t raced previously in this year’s BOFRA Championships) and only placing 9th from 57 finishers in 23:50. His time was a significant improvement on last year and, race-for-race, is still number 1 in his category.

James Herriot Trail Race 31st July 2005

The James Herriot Trail Race was on the same Sunday and three Harriers enjoyed 9 miles of running in some of the best countryside that North Yorkshire has to offer. A hilly course, both on and off road, was no deterrent to Tony Hewson who finished 27th in 66:50. Behind him, Ian Hepworth had another great battle in a season of rivalry with fellow Committee member Neil Piper and Ian came out on top, finishing 53rd in 72:43 to Neil’s 57th in 73:56.
