R& Z win promotion in Northern Senior Track & Field
The hard copy of the results of the Northern Senior T&F League Division 3E on Sunday 7th at Whitley Bay came with a covering letter from Stuart Pailor, Divisional Secretary, and the first paragraph read in part "congratulations to RZH on snatching the 2nd promotion spot right on the line" - now we can party!
The Club went into the last fixture in 4th place, too far behind Seaton AC but close enough to New Marske Harriers andd Tynedale to consider the challenge. There were several key men missing but O’Neil Wolfe chose the perfect time to “come out to play” and although Coach and Manager Fiona Hughes only had five women available, she lead by example and altogether the Club managed to fill 51 out 66 individual slots and 3 out of 4 relays. There were impressive performances all through the card: A-string wins for Ruth Suffell in the javelin, Jon Orange in the 5000m, Noveed Adris in the 110m hurdles and John Wild in the hammer; there were B-string wins for Ken Harker in the 1500m, Shaun Purkiss in the 5000m, Matt Prosser in the 110m hurdles and O’Neil Wolfe in the 400m hurdles; Sarah Gregory recorded PBs in both the 1500m and 3000m; Jo Adams made a great debut in Senior competition, finishing 2nd in the discus and 3rd in the 800m; Chris Archer also made his debut and ran inside 60 seconds for 400m and Mike Brooks ran a season’s best in the steeplechase.

Seaton AC won the match and RZH finished second. Seaton AC were promoted as Champions with 31 League points and RZH were runners-up with 23 points, one point more than NMH - who slipped to 6th behind Tynedale when they couldn’t muster a team for the 4x400m relay, the last event of the day - and RZH snatched the 2nd promotion spot right on the line!
BOFRA Series Farleton Knot Fell Race
Away from T&F and onto the Fells, Gary Bastow continued his BOFRA season, finishing 7th overall and 1st M45 in the Farleton Knot Fell Race in Cumbria. Seven places and nearly four minutes behind the winner might appear a big margin, but when the winner is Mark Croasdale, former GB fell and marathon international with a 2:16 PB and the current English team manager who is leading the Series, then the gap doesn’t appear quite so large. Although Gary isn’t first in his M45 category he is well placed, having 287 points from 5 races, behind last year’s winner, Paul Tuson who has 425 points from 8 races with the best 8 from 13 races to score in this year's BOFRA series.
