NYSD Track & Field Darlington - 9th August 2005
The sixth and last NYSD T&F League was held at Eastbourne Sports Complex, Darlington on Tuesday 9th as the original venue of choice, Clairville Stadium, Middlesbrough, is still in the midst of refurbishment. It was a decent night for athletics and for the showdown between Middlesbrough & Cleveland Athletic Club and Billingham Marsh House Harriers with the Clubs starting the match level on 113 points each. RZH started the match in 3rd place with 97 points, one more than Darlington Harriers & Athletic Club and with both more than 30 points ahead of the other eight Clubs in the League. The young sprinters were the pick-of-the-night for the Club with Sophie Broadway winning both her 200m and 300m races after Leanne Shaw and Ruth Hill had finished one-two in their 200m race, but Katie Roberts opted-out of running and settled for jumping and throwing and came up trumps with a PB and winning throw in the discus. RZH results: 200m - U13B Rob Maclean 30.3 & Thomas Allen 30.7; U15G - Leanne Shaw 27.1, Ruth Hill 27.7, Brogan Fraser 29.3 & Jane Thornton 30.3; U17W - Sophie Broadway 27.3; J/S/VW - Fiona Hughes 34.9; J/S/VM - Matt Prosser (JM) 24.9; 300m - U17W - Sophie Broadway 43.9; 1000m - U13B Thomas Allen 3:18.6; U15G - Jane Thornton 3:51.0; 3000m J/S/VW - Fiona Hughes & Jenny Fenwick (JW) both 13:48.2; J/S/VM - James Brownfields-Pope 10:39.8; long jump - U13B Rob Maclean 3m33 & Thomas Allen 2m85; high jump U15G - & Jane Thornton 1m25 & Brogan Fraser 1m20; triple jump - U17W Katie Roberts 8m54; discus - U17W Katie Roberts 20m59; J/S/VW - Fiona Hughes 14m87; J/S/VM - John Wild (M50) 28m61. But thirteen athletes were not enough to keep Darlington at bay and, although the Females finished the season in 3rd place and the Males finished 4th, the Club surrendered 3rd place to their bigger neighbours.
Darlington 10K & 3K Road Races 14th August 2005
Ben Purkiss at Darlingtom

There was a bigger turnout of Harriers in Darlington on Sunday 14th for the Road Races. The Family Fun Run got things underway and young Ben Purkiss-McEndoo showed the same determination in his run as his Dad always does. The were four Juniors in the 3K Road Race that followed and Marc Scott was first Harrier home in 6th place in 10:34. He was followed by Ashley Winzer, 13th in 11:56, Madeleine Winzer, 14th and 3rd girl in 11:59 and Jane Thornton 24th in 13:17. The big one, the 10K Road Race, attracted another record field including Martin Scaife of Morpeth (winner 3 times in the past 4 years) who ran away from his opposition to win by almost 2 minutes. There was something more of a race behind him with two Harriers, Jon Orange and Rich Hunt, mixing-it with Terry Wall and Alan Shepherd of Morpeth and John Archer of Low Fell, and it was well into the last kilometre before the places were sorted. Unfortunately for the Harriers, Eric Williams had pulled a hamstring in training the previous week and didn’t make the starting line or the Club could have had three in the first ten and made the team result less of a foregone conclusion - the Club finished runners-up to Morpeth in the Men’s team race. RZH results: 2nd (& 1st M40) Jon Orange 32.17, 4th Rich Hunt 32.34, 35th (& 10th M40) Ian Scott 36.31, 36th Shaun Purkiss 36.39, 72nd (& 4th M55) Mike Brooks 39.08, 99th (& 7th Woman) Andrea Woodvine 40.21, 258th (and first home for Brown Trout FC) Dan Brooks 44.54, 454th Chris Peacock 49.48, 533rd Louise Foster 51.47 & 601st Shirley Mathurin 53.44 - from 971 finishers. As well as the Harriers, there some impressive performances from other Richmond runners: James Ledger and Greg Carter of Easby Electronics finished 108th in 40.35 and 315th in 46.35 respectively and they would’ve been well placed in the Corporate Team Challenge had Peter Wicks not “run out of steam” when on course for a PB; Helen Driver finished 190th in 43.08 and Emma Robinson was delighted to run inside 50 minutes for the first time, finishing 453rd in 49.46.
Askern 10M Road Race 14th August 2005
On the same Sunday, Rachel Ross Russell chose to compete in the Askern 10 mile Road Race, finishing 22nd in 60:33 and winning the Yorkshire Championships. Rachel was 2nd Woman, 52 seconds and 3 places behind Gill Keddie of Leeds City AC who was a late entry and forfeited the Championship. Two weeks earlier, Rachel ran in the Harrogate 10K, advertised as two undulating and scenic laps around the town centre, and finished 16th and 1st Woman in 36:33, over a minute ahead of Bernadette Taylor, the North East Counties Champion, and collected a prize worth £100.
