As well as the British Open Fell Runners Association race series, Gary Bastow has been competing in local Fell Races, starting with Roseberry Topping in July and continuing with the Arncliffe Gala Fell Race on Saturday 13th August. A short race, 1¼ miles and 500 feet of climb to the fell top and back, Gary finished 7th overall, 2nd Veteran and won two prizes. He was back to the BOFRA following Sunday at Gargrave, near Skipton, and again finished the race in 7th place overall in 25:48, a little over 3 minutes behind the winner, Alistair Dunn. Gary was 2nd to Adrian Pickles in the M45 category for the first time this season but is still ten points ahead of him in the cumulative scores. Although he has consistently beaten Paul Tuson, Kevin Rogan and Paul Wilson (the three runners heading the points table who have run more races) and there are only three more races on the calendar, he isn’t counting any chickens yet.

Aukland Castle 10K - 21st August 2005

The Auckland Castle 10K on Sunday 21st promoted by Wear Valley District Council had considerable prize money, incorporated the AAAoE Championships and an Inter-Counties race, and attracted a quality field from both this country and Africa. Mikah Kogo of Kenya took the honours in 28:49 with Peter Riley of Leigh just 5 seconds behind. The first two men were both inside 29 minutes and another three, all from Kenya, finished inside 30 minutes: there was a Woman’s course record with Olga Kimayio of Kenya finishing in 32:45 and a total of 121 runners inside 40 minutes. To emphasise the quality of the race, Martin Scaife of Morpeth finished 13th on the day in 30:16 despite being 10 seconds faster than the previous Sunday when he won the Darlington 10K. His Club-mate Alan Shepherd was 6th at Darlington in 32:49 but 33rd at Bishop Auckland in 32:24 and Mark Hood of Sunderland, 7th at Darlington, was over 30 seconds faster but finished down in 35th place. The Richmond and Zetland Harriers top team took the week off but there were still four prepared to mix it with the best: Mike Brooks finished 72nd and 4th M55 in 39:54, Andrea Woodvine was 123rd in 40:11, Ed Devlin 175th in 43:00 and Ian Hepworth 245th in 46:10, from 510 finishers. The unofficial Men’s team scored 492 points and would’ve finished in 16th place.
