Guy Fawkes 10mile Road Race - Ripley 6th November 2005

There was a record number of entries in the Guy Fawkes 10 mile Road Race, organised by Nidd Valley Runners on Sunday 6th from Ripley near Harrogate. This year’s race incorporated the Road Runners Club 10 Mile Championship and this, as well as the popularity of the undulating course, helped swell the total entry to 874. Paul Green of Hallamshire Harriers won the race 53:44 in heavy rain and Bingley Veteran, Lisa Mawer was 17th overall in 60:02 to finish first Woman. Paul Scott of RZH finished in 134th place in 70:45 and raceaholic Sarah Gregory continued her “post-Berlin, find some speed” regime to finish 247th in 76:50.

Over the past several weeks, many of Richmond and Zetland Harriers younger runners have been in school competition, in the Area Championships, the Area Trials and the ESAA Knock-out Cup.

Jo Adams

The Hambleton & Richmondshire Schools Area Championships are open to all pupils in years 7 to 11 who want to run. This year they were held at the Allertonshire School on Tuesday 18th October. Known results are sketchy but include Marc Scott, winner of the year 7 boy’s race and Jo Adams, runner-up in the combined years 10 and 11 girl’s race. Other runners included Rob Scott and Rob Maclean in the year 7 boy’s race, Hannah Dawson and Rachael Holloway in the year 8 girl’s race, Sam Wood in the year 8 boy’s race, Brogan Fraser and Ruth Hill in the year 9 girl’s race, Tom Osborn and Tom Allen in the year 9 boy’s race plus Leanne Shaw and Rosie Adams in the race for year 10 and 11 girls.

The Area Trials differ from the Championships in that they are selection races for the North Yorkshire Schools teams. Races in both genders are divided into Year 7, Junior, Inter and Seniors and the ultimate prize for the last three age groups is selection for the English Schools X-C Championships that will be staged next March at Mansfield. This year’s Trials were held at Richmond School on Tuesday 1st November and again, results are sketchy: Marc Scott and Doug Roberts were convincing winners of the Year 7 and Inter Boy’s races respectively, Josh Miers was 3rd in the Inter Boys and sisters, Jo and Rosie Adams were 2nd and 3rd in the Inter Girl’s race.

The opening round of the ESAA Knock-out Cup was contested on Wednesday 5th October at Thirsk Racecourse and the only team to progress was the Junior Boys team from the Allertonshire School. The Regional Final was at Whitby on Saturday 12th November and RZH had one runner, Marc Scott, in the Junior Boys race. He finished in 3rd place and 1st counter for the team who finished in 2nd place and have qualified for the National Final to be held at Leeds Grammar School on Saturday 3rd December - a tremendous achievement for the School.
