Annual Presentation Evening Saturday 11th February 2006

Richmond and Zetland Harriers held their annual presentation evening at Bedale Sports and Athletic Association on Saturday 11th February, where a fabulous evening was had by all who attended, with a hot buffet and disco rounding off the proceedings. Awards were made relating to the 2004/05 cross country season and 2005 track and field season for both junior and senior athletes. A number of the junior trophies are determined by the number of points accumulated during the Young Athletes League, whereas others are awarded on merit and performance, especially in the cross country races.

Top points scorer in the Young Athletes League U13 category was Naomi Moks, who took part in a wide variety of events. The same trophy for the U15 age group went to Leanne Shaw, particularly for her performances in the 100m and 200m, while Katie Roberts was the winner in the U17 category, whose forte is the middle distances.

The male cross country award when to Doug Roberts, who has been a fantastic athlete throughout the season, with excellent results across the board. Jon Orange meanwhile collected the male road running plate, for winning the M40 category in the Harrogate & District Road Race League, amongst numerous other accolades. The trophy for best male hurdler was awarded to Noveed Adris, who had a fabulous season on the track and was a regular at all the senior track and field league fixtures. The prize for best male thrower went to Jon Wild, who had a truly outstanding season and as a result also collected the trophy for best veteran. Jon won a silver award in the British Masters Throwing Pentathlon, took the national title in the British Masters Throwing Decathlon, as well as gaining 2 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals at the World Throwers Club Championships in Hungary.

Nick Outhwaite picked up the award for best male jumper, with a new club record and PB of 2m 60, achieved in the pole vault, while the best all-round junior athlete trophy was awarded jointly to brothers Marc & Rob Scott, during their first full season with the club, with Marc also collecting the Starvis trophy for the best U20 cross country athlete. Callum Wadsworth meanwhile, took the runner’s up prize in the best all-rounder category. Tony Hewson walked away with the prize for the most-improved senior male athlete, having set a new PB at the London Marathon amongst other achievements. Leanne Shaw collected her second trophy of the evening for best female sprinter, with Jessie Roberts taking the same honours for cross country. Lindsey Johnson had an impressive season, making the final of the English Schools Championship in the javelin, achieving a PB and new club record, which earned her the title of best female thrower.

The award of best all-round junior female was also shared, this time by Brogan Fraser and Ruth Hill, who are both sprinters, with Rosie Adams as a worthy runner-up in this category. Her sister, Jo Adams was the creditable winner of the Engraver’s Trophy; awarded for attitude and effort. The Becky Robinson Cup, presented to someone deemed to be a true mentor and role model, went to Julie Roberts, for her help on training nights, at races and now as an official. Finally, Christianne Adams and Bill Atkinson were laudable winners of The Chairman’s Trophy for their coaching, officiating and general support for the club.

MCAA Indoor Open Meeting - Birmingham

Ken Harker was in action again, this time at the MCAA Indoor Open Meeting at the NIA, Birmingham, which provided solid training for his quest to make the 800m final at the World Masters Indoor Championships in Linz, Austria in March. He had another great run to finish 4th in his 800m heat in a time of 2.02.8, which he anticipates will take him towards his target of a sub-2 minute time. Ken will be on the indoor track at Birmingham again next week.
