NYSD Cross Country Richmond - 5th March 2006
Richmond & Zetland Harriers hosted the sixth and final NYSD Cross Country meeting on Sunday 5th March, with numerous members and helpers making it a success. There were 24 athletes, who took part on home ground, where the course was firm following the colder weather, making for a faster pace.
The Under 13 Boys team did the club proud by taking the team victory and levelling the score with Scarborough, in honours for the team title. Fergus Roberts was the leading Harrier in 4th place, Marc Scott in 5th and Thomas Allen in 6th, setting the scene for a great result. Sam Wood was next home in 15th position and Rob Scott in18th, completing the winning combination. Maddy Winzer also maintained her winning formula in the Under 13 Girls race, which sees her take first place overall in her age group. The team took their best result to date, with Amy Coulson finishing in 15th, Rachel Holloway in 21st and Kerry Robson looking comfortable in 27th place.
Rory Wadsworth was the sole Harrier in the Under 15 Boys age group and crossed the line in 11th position, while the Under 15 Girls had 2 athletes toe the line; Vikki Waite taking 16th place and the ever-present Rosie Adams close behind in 17th.
Heather Halliday in Senior women's race
 |
With no Richmond & Zetland competitors in the Under 17 Men’s race, the next to compete were the Senior Women. Six athletes tackled the undulating course over a distance of 6K, with Jessie Roberts leading the ladies home and taking her best finishing position this season in 9th place. Heather Halliday, only returned from Canada that morning, found her usual form taking the tape in 11th position, which earns her the ladies Vet 2 title. Fiona Hughes also clocked up a great result as third team counter in 24th, followed by Cara Penfold in 26th. Katie Roberts ran solidly to claim 30th place and Jenny Fenwick had a comfortable outing to cross the line in 39th.
The Senior Men also put out a team of regulars, resulting in another solid performance. Jon Orange was first counter in 7th place, with Shaun Purkiss taking 16th position, both of whom are now well along in their London marathon training. Chris Peacock moved up the rankings to 40th and Taff Rogers was, as ever, close behind in 50th.
