NYSD Track & Field - Darlington 2nd May 2006

The first NYSD track and field match got underway at Darlington on 2nd May, where events are organised such, that senior and junior athletes can compete during the same evening. There was a good show of competitors from Richmond and Zetland, with results to match. In the junior age groups, there was sharp competition in the 200m races, with Fergus Roberts winning from Ryan Richardson for the Under 13 Boys. Ruth Hill and Leanne Shaw also recorded wins in their races, while Charlotte Dinsdale recorded second in the same event, in addition to second place in the Long Jump and fine results in the 800m, with team mates Amy Coulson and Kerry Robson. The Under 15 Boys also faired well in the 200m with Jack Thomson, Tom Allen and Sam Wood claiming second, third and sixth places respectively. The middle distances also proved fruitful with second place for Fergus Roberts and also for Tom Allen in the Under 15 Boys event.

Jessie Roberts took top position in the senior ladies 800m, along with Fiona Hughes and Jenny Fenwick, while James Brownfield-Pope set his benchmark for the season, with a time of 2.20.8 in a very competitive men’s 800m race. Fiona went on to take second place in the Javelin, while John Wild went one better in the men’s event, once again at the top of his game, throwing 32.94m to claim a convincing win.

The course is a testing one, covering approximately 10K, with a long, challenging hill thrown in for good measure. The Harriers put forward a team of 11 athletes and duly took top place in the male vets race, as well as third in the elite competition. Jon Orange was first home in 4th place overall, with a fantastic time of 35.16 and took also top spot for the M40 vet category. He was closely followed by Shaun Purkiss, who was 14th overall and took second place for the M40 vets. Jeff Thurlbeck showed determination to make it home in 82nd place, while first lady home for the Harriers was Sarah Gregory in 112th position. Ian Hepworth and Paula Copeland followed in quick succession, to cross the line in 131st and 143rd place, while Neil Piper and Shirley Mathurin rounded off a successful race, finishing 159th and 200th overall.

Bluebell Trail 10 Mile - Halifax 7th May 2006

Shirley was soon back in action again, as she tackled the demanding Bluebell Trail 10 Mile off-road race on Sunday 7th May near Halifax, which is organised by Stainland Lions running club. It is not for shrinking violets, as it incorporates a long, steep ascent and a river crossing, as well as living up to its name, with some rewarding scenery through bluebell-carpeted woodland. Continuing her good form of late, Shirley crossed the line in 1.56.04 to claim 235th place on the day.
