North of England AA Championships Leeds 27th-28th May

Three athletes made the trip to compete in the North Of England AA Championships for Under 15 and Under 17 year olds at South Leeds Stadium on 27th and 28th May. The races were a good test, run at a fast pace, making qualifying for the finals all the more difficult and challenging. Ruth Hill elected to concentrate solely on the 200m in the Under 15 age group during this outing, after sustaining a knee injury, which she at first believed would keep her out for the rest of the season. Fortunately it was not as serious as first feared and she went on to win her heat in a time of 27.46 and qualify comfortably for the final. Ruth finished 7th overall in a time of 27.58, not her fastest time, but was pleasing in at a highly competitive meeting and during a recovery period.

Brogan Fraser

Leanne Shaw also competed in the 200m and 300m events for the Under 17 ladies, running solid times in the heats of 27.14 and 43.76, which will prove good grounding for her up and coming races, which sees a busy schedule of events. Brogan Fraser chose to participate in the 100m and 200m, also in the Under 15 category and although her times were not enough to reach the finals, they once again proved consistent, finishing in 13.59 and 29.36.

Melmerby 10K - 28th May 2006

Melmerby was once again host to one of the 10K road races in the Black Sheep Race Series on Sunday 28th May and the Harriers had two athletes competing on the day. The course is an undulating one and was run in warm, breezy conditions, with 221 runners taking part. Paul Scott was first across the line in a time of 42.08, taking 59th place and is taking part in the whole of the race series. Sarah Gregory had a consistent race, taking the tape in a time of 45.18 and claiming first prize in the Under 35 ladies category, as well as the position of 9th lady overall, in what is her first race over this distance for some time.

Richmond Meet Races May 29th 2006

On Monday May 29th, the first 3000m Handicap race and men’s 1500m took place at Richmond Cricket Club in conjunction with Richmond Meet and Richmond Cycle Club; organised by Richmond and Zetland’s Shaun Purkiss. Both races took place on grass, with the men’s mile getting the proceedings underway. Jon Orange took the lead and made most of the running, with Ken Harker close behind, who decided to take it on with 400m to go, making for an exciting finish, as they both raced for the line, with Ken just holding Jon off to win. Doug Roberts had a fantastic run, crossing the line in a superb time of 4.36 faring brilliantly against older opposition. Nick Zissler took 4th place, not quite in the form we are used to seeing him, but nevertheless ran a solid time of 4.44.

The 3000m Handicap race was open junior and senior athletes alike and anyone else wishing to enter, which made for an interesting run. Fergus Roberts took the honours on the day, finishing in an amazing time of 11.41 for an Under 13 boy, showing once again, that he is a real talent for the future. Rosie Adams claimed second place, with a strong performance and time of 13.02, while third position went to Ben Purkiss-McEndoo, in the Under 11 Boys category, who clocked a time of 14.45. Several other Harriers took part and enjoyed the occasion and with a good supporting crowd, it is now hoped this will become an annual event.
