Harrogate League at Richmond 6th June 2006

The third event of the Harrogate and District Road Race League took place at Hudswell, near Richmond on Tuesday 6th June, taking the form of an out and back course, with a long, challenging uphill section and views out over the moors. Thirteen Harriers completed the race on a very warm evening, producing some fantastic results in the process.

Jon Orange was in flying form and took 2nd place overall and first male V40 in a time of 27.33; he was promptly followed by Shaun Purkiss in 8th position, with a superb time of 29.48. Paul Roberts was taking part in his first race in this year’s series and clocked a fantastic result with 10th place in 30.27, ensuring that they finished as the 2nd elite team. Team mate Chris Peacock was close behind in 21st place and a time of 31.51, while new recruit Tad Zaranko ran an excellent race to take 28th position in 32.10 and seal the victory for the men’s veteran team, taking top spot on the night and now leading overall in the competition. Taff Rogers put in another solid performance with 31st place and a time of 32.27, while Jim Robinson, competing in his doorstep, took 54th position and 2nd male V60, crossing the line in 34.26 and making a welcome return to racing. Jeff Thurlbeck took the tape in 35.04, claiming 65th place and Tony Colmer, now recovered from his injury, finished hot on his heels in 67th with a time of 35.12. Final counter for the team was Neil Piper, who had a strong run, taking 99th place in 37.36. Debutant, Richard Braddick, clocked a solid time of 37.59, which earned him 102nd place, whereas Sarah Gregory had a race she’d rather forget, finishing in 110th position with a time of 38.15. Shirley Mathurin rounded off a successful evening’s running, stopping the clock at 44.25 in 157th place.

Kirby Malzeard 10K - 3rd June 2006

Kirky Malzeard 10K was the third race in the Black Sheep Series, taking place on Saturday 3rd June, where a hot day combined with an undulating course, made for a challenging run. Paul Scott felt the heat and was first Harrier to cross the line in 68th place, with at time of 46.26, confirming that the conditions were taxing. Neil Piper also finished in a very respectable time on the day, taking 96th position and finishing in 49.40.

Northern Senior Track & Field - Jarrow 3rd June 2006

The second round of the Northern Senior Track and Field League was held at Jarrow on Saturday 3rd June and the attendance of Richmond and Zetland athletes was once again inadequate, with only 3 men and 5 women competing. This results in an uphill struggle for the athletes who do compete, having to undertake a multitude of events, however, those who were present, put in staunch performances. John Wild was once again in fine form in all 4 throwing events, supported by James Wardman and Ken Harker, who put in good quality runs over the 400m and 800m distances. Jo Binks once again proved invaluable, combining her jumping, throwing and hurdling skills. Fiona Hughes competed in the jumps and shorter track distances, while Jenny Fenwick ran bravely in the sprints and middle distances. Katie Roberts ran convincingly in the 1500m and rounded off her afternoon with the 200m, while Sarah Gregory has consistent runs in the 3000m and 1500m, in addition to completing all the throwing events.
