British Miler's Club Grand Prix - Solihull - 24th June 2006

Ken Harker and team mate James Wardman were in action at the British Miler’s Club Grand Prix race at Solihull on Saturday 24th June over the toughly contested 800m distance. Both ran exceptionally well and produced season’s best times in the event, with James finishing 4th in his race in a time of 1.57.89 and Ken 5th in his, with a time of 2.00.9; his fastest time for well over a year. This is a particularly pleasing result for Ken, who will be competing at the World Master’s Championships in Poland later in July. He flies out on 24th July, with the heats starting on 27th and the finals, which he is aiming for, taking place on 29th. At one time his participation in the event looked doubtful due to injury, but things have progressed well over the last few weeks and it looks as though he will now be in fine form for the start of the competition. Ken has some solid training planned, as well as more races in the run up to the championships, which include the British Master’s Championships in Birmingham. His main aim is to reach the finals, then as he knows, anything can happen, just like the World Indoor Master’s Championships in Austria in March, when Ken brought home the Bronze Medal.

Rainton 10K - 25th June 2006

The annual Rainton 10K and Fun Run took place on Sunday 25th June, with Marc Scott taking the honours in the Fun Run, winning in a time of 14.53, more than a minute ahead of his closest rival, from a field of 70 runners. This also earned him first place in the Under 14 Boys age group and shows he is in good shape during the track and field season. Sarah Gregory took part in the main event, which is an undulating course, both on and off road around the local villages. Producing a solid run, Sarah crossed the line in a time of 45.50 and was 6th lady overall, taking the Under 35 Ladies age group title in the process and 100th position from a field of 249 competitors.

Young Athletes League - Shildon - 25th June 2006

Katie Roberts - In action earlier this year

The third Young Athletes League fixture got underway at Shildon on 25th June, with plenty of support from Richmond and Zetland’s junior competitors, who gained an excellent second place in the match results. There was a busy afternoon for the Under 13 boys, with Rob MacLean, Daniel MacFarlane, Nathaniel Frankland, Jon Bentley and Callum Wadsworth covering all the events between them and winning the 4 x 100m relay. There were also pleasing results for the Under 15 Boys, with Jack Thomson winning the 200m and Sam Wood taking the honours in the 1500m, with the team taking 2nd place in the relay. Nick Outhwaite once again topped the ranks for the Pole Vault with 2.60m, while the girls were equally adept at winning, with Jo Adams in the 1500m and discus and team mates Katie Roberts and Rosie Adams scoring valuable points in the sprints, middle distance and throwing events. Ruth Hill had another excellent day’s sprinting, taking top spot in the 100m and 200m, as well as an award for athlete of the match. Brogan Fraser took first place in the 75m hurdles and produced a first-rate performance in the 100m, with Rachel Holloway taking runner’s up position in the 1500m and the javelin. Holly Carrick looked comfortable in the Discus, with a winning throw of 15.99m and was narrowly beaten in the Shot Putt. Charlotte Dinsdale was on form for the Under 13 Girls, winning the 150m and Shot Putt, while Kerry Robson and Beth Terry had great results in the Long Jump, Shot Putt, 75m and 150m to take the team well clear in to second position.
