English Schools Championships Gateshead - 8th July 2006
Four Richmond and Zetland Harriers junior athletes were chosen to represent North Yorkshire at the English Schools Championships at Gateshead International Stadium on Saturday 8th July. Leanne Shaw performed to her very best on the day in the Intermediate Girls 200m, clocking a time of 26.05. This is not only a new PB for Leanne, but saw her placed 5th in her heat, underlining the high level of competition. In the same age group, Jo Adams placed 7th in her heat in the 800m with an excellent time of 2.22.93, showing that she has competed strongly on the track this season. In the Junior Girls category, Ruth Hill was 7th in her heat, running the 200m in a fantastic time of 26.77, which has lead to an invitation to represent Yorkshire in the North of England County Championships. Holly Carrick was the sole competitor of the four in a field event, finishing 13th in the Shot Putt with a top performance of 8.45m, which stands her in good stead for the remainder of the season.
Harrogate League - Guiseley - 6th July 2006

Thursday 6th July saw the last meeting in the Harrogate and District Road Race League take place on a hot evening at Guiseley. Team prizes were still up for grabs in the men’s vets category and in the elite race, with the first 3 athletes from each club time to count. On an undulating and mainly off-road course, Jon Orange took his regular place as front runner for the Harriers in 2nd place overall in a time of 29.13, earning him the male V40 title for the race series. Shaun Purkiss was next home in a superb time of 31.58, taking 13th place, while Taff Rogers took 32nd position, with a fine run on the night in 34.11. This was enough for them to take a terrific and well-earned 2nd place in the elite category overall in the league. Chris Peacock finished in fine form in 34.55, which was good enough for 40th place and Tony Colmer put in a solid performance to finish 59th in 36.27, sealing a fantastic victory for the men’s vet team in the series. A bit further down the field, Ian Hepworth had a strong run to finish in 40.48, taking 119th spot and new comer Richard Braddick was close behind in 125th with a time of 41.25. Sarah Gregory and Neil Piper were down on usual performances and quite disappointed with their tired legs; Sarah taking 129th position in 41.41 and Neil 153rd in 44.00. Paul Roberts was a casualty for the men’s team, having to withdraw from the race after a mile, due to an achilles tendon injury.
British Masters - Birmingham - 8th&9th July 2006
John Wild was in action once again, proving his throwing pedigree at the British Master’s Track and Field Championships at Birmingham on 8th and 9th July. An excellent string of results, saw him take an excellent overall standing, with 1st in the Javelin with a throw of 34.79m, 3rd in the Discus with 38.76m, 4th in the Hammer with 39.07m, 5th in the Shot Putt with 10.28m and 5th in the Weight with 13.15m. John had hoped for a better result in the Weight, but nevertheless, performed very strongly in a group in which he was the eldest competitor.
British Milers Club -Stretford
Ken Harker continued his warm-up for the World Master’s Championships in Poland next week, with a fine performance at Stretford, with the British Miler’s Club. He finished 7th in the 800m with at time of 2.02.5 in what was a close, tactical and competitive race. Good luck to Ken in his second World Master’s Championships this season.
Gribdale Gallop Fell Race - 11th July 2006
Moving from the track to grass, as Paul Goad took to the hills once again in the Gribdale Gallop fell race at Great Ayton on the evening of Tuesday 11th July. Tackling the challenging course in a time of 70.01, Paul took 62nd place overall, with a satisfying performance.
NYSD Track & Field Darlington - 20th June 2006
Results are now available for the 4th NYSD Track and Field Meeting at Darlington on 20th June, with some pleasing results from Richmond and Zetland athletes on a wet and windy evening. There were top performances from Ruth Hill and Brogan Fraser in the Under 15 Girls 200m, while Rosie Adams had a fabulous run in the Under 17 Ladies 200m and Thomas Allen was runner up in the Under 15 Boys 800m.
