Snape 5K & 10K - 23rd September 2006

No less than nineteen Harriers of all ages, took part in the annual races at Snape, near Bedale, on Saturday 23rd September, with outstanding results over both the 5K and 10K distances. Both courses are fast, flat and have off-road sections around the local footpaths and trails. The number of competitors has grown each year, making this a popular, local fixture amongst all runners.

First Harrier home and winner of the 5K race, from 109 competitors, was Fergus Roberts, in superb shape with a fantastic time of 19.18, while team mate Marc Scott was not far behind and took the runner’s up place in 20.05. Thomas Allen was the third club member to cross the line in an excellent time of 21.03, which earned him 5th place overall. Jo Adams was the winning lady and first female Harrier on the day, showing that her summer track season has paid off, with a time of 22.46 in 9th. Amy Coulson put in another strong performance, finishing in 23.37 and taking 13th position. Hannah Dawson was next home, displaying good form coming into the cross country season, claiming 21st place with 24.43, while Tom Targett crossed the line in 22nd position, with a first-rate time of 25.48. Jane Thornton had a strong finish in 43rd place in 29.25, while Ben Purkiss-McEndoo, one of the youngest Harriers, had an excellent run, stopping the clock in 31.05, to take 49th position overall.

The results were equally impressive for Richmond and Zetland Harriers over the 10K distance, the highest placed of which was Dougie Roberts, flying around the course in a tremendous time of 35.50 and claiming second place overall, from 76 finishers. Ken Harker used his track speed to close the gap to only 9 seconds and finished in 3rd position in 35.59. Training partner and fellow Harrier, James Wardman, also put in a fine performance, taking 4th place on the day with 36.47. Shaun Purkiss-McEndoo was hot on his heels, taking only 37.14 to complete the course and claim 5th position, making it four in a row for the club. Next across the line was Tad Zaranko in 38.14, only 2 seconds adrift of his closest competitor, taking 7th overall.

Jim Robinson accomplished another great result and looked in fine form, crossing the line in 20th place with a time of 42.51. The only female Harrier over this distance, Jessie Roberts, also had an excellent race, taking 2nd place in the ladies race in 43.26 and 22nd position overall. Paul Scott was meanwhile continuing his good form over 10K, after finishing the Black Sheep Race Series earlier in the summer, his time of 43.46 placed him in 25th. Ian Hepworth had a strong and solid run, also building on his summer racing, to finish in 45.10 and take 32nd position. Close behind in 33rd was James Brownfield-Pope, competing over a longer distance than usual, but still producing a quality result, in a time of 45.44.
