Inter Counties Cross Country Championships Nottingham - 24th February 2007

U13 Boys Gold Medal Team

Marc Scott (2nd R) & Fergus Roberts (4th R)

Medals were once again the flavour of the day for Richmond and Zetland athletes, who made the journey to Wollaton Park, Nottingham on Saturday 24th February, to take part in the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships. They all represented Yorkshire, after qualifying via the County Championships at Skipton earlier in January. Top result of the day once again went to the talented Fergus Roberts in the Under 13 Boys race, who struck team gold along with fellow Harrier Marc Scott. Fergus, who receives funding from Hambleton District Council, added to his already outstanding winter season, with the fabulous achievement of 5th place overall, only 29 seconds behind the winner and first team counter for Yorkshire. Only 18 seconds further back in 11th position overall and 3rd team counter was team mate Marc Scott, also claiming a wonderful gold team medal for his efforts and looking rightly pleased with himself on the champion’s rostrum.

Maddy Winzer was another athlete continuing her excellent cross country form, with 118th place overall in the Under 13 Girls race and acting as 4th team counter for Yorkshire over the 3K course. This is her second outing in Yorkshire colours at this venue, so the future looks bright for her. Second claim member Andrea Woodvine placed a well-earned 48th in the Senior Women’s race over 8K, showing that she is still in great shape and claimed a team bronze medal in the process, finishing as 4th team counter for Yorkshire.

AAA Junior England Indoor Championships - NIA Birmingham 24th February 2007

Brogan Fraser had a busy weekend, competing in two different indoor events over the sprint distance of 60m. On Saturday 24th February, she was in action at the AAA Junior England Indoor Championships at the NIA, Birmingham, having qualified with a time of 8.3 seconds earlier in the season. Although she did not better her previous result, she finished in a highly credible time of 8.47 and thoroughly enjoyed the occasion and experience. The next day she ventured to the Manchester Indoor Meeting and after finishing 4th in her first event with 8.52, went on to win her next race in a great time of 8.49.

Snake Lane 10M Race Pocklington - 25th February 2007

The same weekend saw the running of the popular Snake Lane 10 road race at Pocklington, where Sarah Gregory wanted to use the distance to sharpen her training for the forthcoming London Marathon. All did not go exactly according to plan and after an unscheduled Paula Radcliffe style “pit stop” en-route and a recurrent knee injury emerging during the final mile, she was simply glad to cross the finish line in a time of 74.25. This gave her a position of 295th overall from a field of 667 competitors and she will now try to correct the injury, in order to continue training for the marathon in 7 weeks time.
