The Harrogate & District Road Race League got underway on Thursday 3rd May at Otley, over a challenging course, which rises sharply, covering a distance of 10K and taking in a demanding hill en-route. Nine Richmond and Zetland Harriers made the trip, three of which had run the London Marathon only 10 days earlier. Jon Orange started as he meant to go on, taking a fantastic 2nd place overall and first MV 40 in 33.38, while Shaun Purkiss showed fine form to take 15th in 37.11. Ian Scott was next home in 18th place with a time of 38.01, followed closely by Tad Zaranko, who promptly claimed 23rd position, crossing the line in 38.20. There was then quite a gap to the next athlete, in the form of Taff Rogers, holding the team together in 91st and finishing in 43.04. Jenny Hands was the only lady on the team, but took a well-deserved 94th position with 43.08, with Darren Cox finishing as the 100th competitor in 43.45. Ian Hepworth recovered well from the marathon to take 145th place in a time of 46.33, while Neil Piper brought the team home in 48.19, taking 181st position, which placed the team 8th overall and 2nd in the vets category.
