BMAF - Milton Keynes 1st July 2007

Master thrower John Wild has been picking up yet more records and trophies, to add to his ever-growing collection, after being in action over two consecutive weekends. The BMAF Weight Pentathlon at Milton Keynes, took place on Sunday 1st July and has always been one of the main events in his competition calendar. With things coming together on the day, John once again topped the MV55 age group, tallying 3820 points and accomplishing some magnificent throws into the bargain. The event is comprised of five throws and John certainly more than made his mark on the field, with distances of 40.48m in the Hammer, 10.86m for Shot Putt, 40.79m for the Discus, 38.23m with the Javelin and 15.86m for the Heavy Weight. Amazingly he managed to break the North East Masters records in four of the five disciplines, with only the Shot Putt record remaining in tact. He was particularly pleased with his performance in the Discus, accomplishing the longest throw of the day in all age groups and a distance, which has placed him an incredible10th on the national all-time list for MV55!

John was back to winning ways just a week later at the North East Masters Championships on Saturday 7th July, where he took victory in all five disciplines and another crown in Masters field athletics. The competition saw him accomplish 37.46m in the Hammer, 38.15m for the Discus, 32.58m for the Javelin, 9.98m in the Shot Putt, as well as 13.89m for the Heavy Weight, proving that he really is at the top of his game when it comes to throwing.

Harrogate League - Guiseley - 3rd July 2007

Esholt, near Guiseley was the venue for the 5th meeting in the Harrogate & District Road Race League on Tuesday 3rd July, over a very muddy and slippery course, with added off-road sections. Richmond and Zetland fielded the minimum number of 10 athletes required to make up a team and came away with both individual and team honours. Jon Orange reclaimed his title as the leading MV40 in the league and established this by finishing 3rd overall on the night in a fantastic time of 29.10, while Shaun Purkiss showed strength to take 22nd position in 33.05. Kelley Haniver was next home in 42nd place, taking the honours of first lady in the process and an excellent time of 34.42. She was followed in by Chris Peacock, who promptly claimed 46th place, crossing the line in 35.00 and Taff Rogers in 71st with a time of 36.47. Jim Robinson made a brave effort, after falling close to the start and suffering deep cuts, he carried on and recorded a brilliant finish in 37.52 and 91st position. Emma Bates was the next athlete home, making her debut in this league and running well to take 115th place in 38.09, while team mate Darren Cox kept the team in contention with a strong run, finishing in 39.00, making him the 115th finisher. Ian Hepworth had another good run, moving up the ranks to 139th place in a time of 40.43, while a tired Sarah Gregory brought the team home in 41.30, taking 151st position. Final positions in the league overall, show that Richmond and Zetland claim the Vet’s Trophy once more and take 3rd place in the Elite Category, as well as a hard-earned 4th team overall; the best result for quite a few seasons, not forgetting Jon Orange, who once again retained his individual crown.

Northern Senior Track & Field League - Shildon 8th July 2007

There was little respite for some, with a busy weekend, which saw Richmond and Zetland host the 3rd fixture in the Northern Senior Track and Field League at Shildon on Sunday 8th July. A relatively poor attendance once again meant that the club did not realise its potential and relegation is now on the horizon for the second year in a row, however, those competing certainly did so with determination. Jo Adams had a great run over 400m, clocking 63.2 as well as 2nd in the Discus . Jenny Fenwick also entered a multitude of events, covering the Long Jump, sprints, some middle distance and the relays, while Rosie Adams got to grips with the 800m, running a solid time of 2.46.5.
