Young Athletes League - Darlington - 4th May 2008

The first meeting of the Young Athletes League took place at Darlington on Sunday 4th May, where there were several victories for Richmond and Zetland Harriers’ junior athletes. Sam Wood took an impressive victory over 3000m in the Under 17 Men’s category, achieving a Grade 3 in the process, with a brilliant time of 9.24.7, while Paul Harmsworth, claimed 1st place in the Under 13 Boy’s Shot Putt and Long Jump. George Robinson also ran well over 800m, while Aaron Mornington took the honours with a magnificent throw in the Javelin of 48.41m and James Hunt performed well in the Discus and Long Jump. Fergus Roberts moved up an age group to Under 15 Boys and continued his excellent form by winning the Discus and finishing second in the 400m and 1500m in 4.42.0, with Marc Scott for company, also crossing the line in an excellent time of 4.49.4 and then went on to win the Javelin. In the same category, Tom Bingley was the runner up over both 100m and 200m, while team mate Alex Wright threw competently in the Discus and Shot Putt.
For the girls, Sophie Talbot and Kerry Robson were in the mix over 100m and 200m, with Amy Coulson and Rosie Stirr running strongly over 1500m to finish in 5.27.8 and 5.53.3 respectively, both having just moved up to the Under 15 age group. In the Under 13’s competition, Emma King, Abbie Fletcher and Rachel Stirr covered most of the events on offer, with Emma claiming 3rd place in the 800m with a Grade 4 time of 2.49.1 and Abbie 2.57.2. Rachel meanwhile was rewarded with 3rd place over 75m, clocking a fast time of 12.0, bringing the team to 4th place overall on the day.

Senior T&F League - York 3rd May 2008
It was also the turn of the Senior Men and Women over the same weekend at York on Saturday 3rd May. Despite only 2 members of the men’s team turning out for the competition, the ladies had more favourable numbers in their team, which saw Richmond and Zetland finish 3rd overall on the day.
Tim Burn scored numerous, valuable points for the team, with very strong performances, especially over 100m, 200m and 400m, where he recorded 11.6, 23.9 & 54.4 seconds respectively, taking victory in the longest of the sprint events by some margin. Chris Peacock also took victory over 800m, clocking a fine season’s opening time of 2.20.7.
Leanne Shaw wrapped up the sprint events, easing past the opposition to win the 100m and 200m comfortably in excellent times of 13.1 and 27.0. Jane Thornton also put in fine performances over 100m, 200m and 400m, claiming 3rd place with 75.1 over the longer of the events. Fiona Hughes covered a multitude of running and jumping events, claiming a hat trick of 3rd place finishes in High Jump, Long Jump and over 800m in a strong time of 2.56.0. Jenny Fenwick upheld the usual team spirit to take wins in the “B” string of the 800m and 1500m, while Rosie Adams claimed 2nd place over 1500m with a great run, clocking 5.38.3 in the process, as well as competing in the Shot Putt and both relay events. Katie Roberts enjoyed competing mainly in the throwing events, taking 2nd in the Discus with 28.61m, 3rd in Javelin and Triple Jump and an excellent victory over the 400m Hurdles in 81.0. Sarah Gregory promptly claimed 2nd place over 3000m with a clocking of 12.25.5, as well as a win in the Shot Putt “B” String and throws in the Hammer and Javelin.
