Young Athletes League Meeting Darlington - 1st June 2008
The second meeting of the Young Athletes League took place at Darlington on Sunday 1st June, where there were several victories for Richmond and Zetland Harriers’ junior athletes. Sam Wood took another impressive victory over 3000m in the Under 17 Men’s category, with a great time of 9.24.7, accompanied by returning team mate Tom Allen, making a welcome come back with 10.24.9. Liam Fletcher performed very well in the sprints over 200m and 400m in the same age group and claimed 1st place in the Triple Jump with a distance of 10.69m. George Robinson also ran well over 800m, taking 3rd place with 2.16.6, while Aaron Mornington repeated his hat-trick of honours with a great throw in the Javelin of 39.49m, as well as winning the Shot Putt and Hammer. James Hunt also performed valiantly in all three throwing disciplines.
For the Under 15 Boys, Karl Murray took sound victories over 400m and 80m Hurdles, with Tom Bingley also scoring valuable points over the sprint distances. Fergus Roberts was back to winning ways once again, taking the 1500m by storm and achieving a Grade 2 with his time of 4.33.1, while Marc Scott crossed the line in an excellent time of 4.38.0, giving him a Grade 3 age ranking. James King was busy over 400m and 800m, taking the runner up’s position over the longer distance with 2.25.6 and Daniel Overin looked strong in the same race to take 4th place overall. The Under 13 Boys also had a busy time with Paul Harmsworth taking 2nd place over 100m and a win in the Long Jump with a fine distance of 4.27m. Andrew Parkinson put in a good performance over 1500m, finishing well in 5.41.3, while Ewan Findlay enjoyed his first outing in this league to run well over 100m and finish 2nd in the Shot Putt. Nathan O’Connor also performed well to take 4th over 200m with a time of 32.1.
For the girls, Kerry Robson and Rosie Stirr competed admirably in the sprints and middle distance events, with Kerry taking 5th and 6th over 100m and 200m, while Rosie ran well over 1500m to finish 3rd in 5.57.5. She then went on to take 2nd in the Javelin and Kerry 4th overall in the Shot Putt. In the Under 13 Girl’s competition, Emma King claimed a magnificent double winning both the 75m and 800m in 11.3 and 2.45.8 respectively, bringing the team to 2nd place overall on the day.

NYSD Track & Field Darlington - 2nd June 2008
The NYSD Track and Field continued with the latest fixture on Tuesday 3rd June, at Darlington. Richmond and Zetland were once again in fine form, with no less that eight athletes winning their events outright, showing that they are gaining pace throughout the season. There were double victories for Paul Harmsworth in the U13 Boys 100m and Long Jump, Katie Roberts in the Senior Ladies Long Jump and Shot Putt and sprinter Karl Murray took the honours over 100m and 400m for the Under 15 Boys. Tim Burn continued his excellent season by winning the Senior Men’s 100m in a time of 11.6 and Fergus Roberts was awarded athlete of the match for his performance in the Under 15 Boys 1500m, running a magnificent time of 9.38.8, which is a national Grade 2 ranking. He was followed by two team-mates, making it a trio for Richmond and Zetland, with Marc Scott and James King taking 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Veteran Jon Orange dominated the Senior Men’s 3000m race with a brilliant clocking of 8.53.9, well ahead of the field and showing that he is definitely gathering momentum as the summer’s racing progresses. Over the same distance, Kelley Haniver and Jo Adams were also flying, taking excellent times from the race of 10.47.3 and 10.58.7, which placed them in 2nd and 4th places overall. Sam Wood and George Robison were also top competitors in the U17 Men’s 3000m, taking 1st and 2nd positions with 9.28.0 and 9.44.0 respectively, while team mate Tom Allen continued his return from injury with a determined run of 10.53.1 to comfortably take 6th place overall.

Harrogate Road League Thirsk - 5th June 2008

Rounding off another busy period, the Harrogate District Summer Road Race League held its 3rd event at Thirsk on Thursday 5th June. The course covered approximately 5 miles and was mostly on road, with 2 laps taking in the town centre en-route. Ten Richmond and Zetland Harriers made the trip, fielding a full team and managing to hang on to the lead in the race for the Veteran’s Trophy. Jon Orange kept the flag flying and had to settle for 2nd place on this occasion, crossing the line in 26.39 and relinquishing his 100% record to Darren Bilton, that said, he easily retained his crown and unbeaten record so far as top MV45. Doug Roberts was hot on his heels in 3rd place overall, showing that he really is in excellent form at the moment, only 23 seconds adrift of Jon and first Under 18 athlete by over 3 minutes! Tad Zaranko displayed great form to take 14th in 28.53, while training partner Shaun Purkiss claimed 19th place and was next home with a time of 29.14. Paul Roberts promptly claimed 29th position, crossing the line in 30.02 running strongly and Rachel Ross-Russell continued her return to form by winning the ladies race outright, well ahead of her next competitor in 30th place overall, showing that there is still more to come. Tony Ryder was next in sight in 31.05, which earned him 48th position on the night, then there was a slight gap to the next athlete, who was Tony Ditchburn, holding the team together in 99th overall and finishing in 33.46, while Steven Lambert finished as the 137th competitor in 35.22. Ian Hepworth completed the line-up for Richmond and Zetland in 177th place with good running earning him a time of 37.34.
