Richmond and Zetland junior athlete Maddy Winzer, has recently been diversifying from simply running and has been competing at triathlon, achieving some extremely impressive results indeed. She has been in excellent form throughout Summer and progressed rapidly up the ranks to compete recently in Aldershot at the Inter Regional Triathlon Championships on Saturday 30th August, where she represented the Yorkshire and Humberside area.
She had a fantastic race to become national champion in her age group, being the fastest of 22 competitors in the race, with 2 athletes from each region of Great Britain. Maddy certainly faced some seriously talented opposition, before coming out on top, having mastered the three disciplines, which consisted of a 300m swim, 8K bike leg and 2.4K run at the end, for which she clocked a tremendous 30.54, winning by a comfortable margin of 22 seconds. She has undoubtedly benefited from family success in the triathlon, with Rich Hunt, also being a highly successful competitor at national level in the same event.
Congratulations to Maddy on her excellent achievement and ensuring that the club now has four athletes ranked at number one in the country in their respective age groups, following Jon Orange’s recent efforts on the track over 1500m, John Wild taking the gold medal in the discus at the British Masters Championships in July and Fergus Roberts winning the U13 Boys National Cross Country Championships back in February.
