Press Release 1st March 2002 The Buttermere Round is a 22 mile route from Keswick taking-in Honister and other high passes plus some of the Lake Districts most pleasant vistas. It is also a road race and 2 weeks ago, when the weather was so bad that icy-sleet and wind brought runners to a standstill, it wasnt for the tourists. Grete Buck of Richmond and Zetland Harriers isnt a tourist; she is a competitor, and finished 67th and 1st Veteran Lady in a time of 3 hours, 46 minutes & 10 seconds. Grete is in training for the London Marathon: she followed her Cumbrian run with a trip to Pocklington near York last Sunday for the Snake Lane 10, finishing 2nd LVO55 in 1.26.05.The BUSA Indoor Track & Field Championships were last weekend and Louise Jackson continued her athletic education in the 3000m. Louise finished 5th in her heat on Saturday, in a pb time of 10 minutes 40.38 seconds, but had to ice a swollen ankle from running on the tight banked bends. Wilf Paish, former National Coach and advising while at Leeds Metropolitan University, was well impressed and said her performance was worth another 10 seconds outdoors. Unfortunately, running with a sore ankle, Louise couldnt improve her time in Sundays final and finished 10th, but to make the top 10 in the UK is an achievement. Rob Hand of Durham won Tuesday nights K&J Tyres-sponsored Lamplight 5 at Newton Aycliffe in 25.47. His time was almost a minute down on Martin Scaifes winning time in last months race but reflected the cold, wet and windy conditions. Mark Slessor of Jarrow and Malcolm Price of Salford were 2nd and 3rd before the first of the RZH contingent: Jon Orange 4th in 27.09, John Aspell 5th in 27.10, Tony Colmer 12th in 31.05, Mike Brooks 16th in 31.54 and Shane Boulton 22nd in 34.14. Six places further down, Wull McLellan of Swaledale had a run-out with a 40 pound weight Bergen rucksac on his back. This is in preparation for the Redcar Half Marathon and defence of his world-record over the distance! Kerry Matthew of M&C was 1st lady and 19th overall in a time of 33.20. Carl and Nick Outhwaite both ran in the Junior 2¼ mile race. Carl finished 1st in 14.23, just 8 seconds outside his pb despite the weather and Nick showed he is over the cold & flu season finishing in about 18 minutes. The next Lamplight is a week early, on Tuesday 16th March, due to holiday commitments and runners are reminded of the new set of tyres, courtesy of K&J Tyres of Sunderland, on offer as a spot-prize.
