Press Release 15th March 2002 English Schools Cross Country
Championships
This Sunday, the Rotary Club of Richmond are hosting a 2 mile Fun Run for schoolchildren, their friends and parents. The Run around the Easby Loop starts at 11am from behind Richmond Pool, Entries will be taken on the day and, the intention is to raise sponsorship monies for ChildLine and RZH Juniors. There will be trophies to the winners, Certificates for all finishers and spot prizes from McDonalds. Twelve months ago, the English Schools X-C Championships at Chelmsford were cancelled due to the F&MD crisis. For the same reason, the World X-C Championships were moved from Ireland to Belgium. The "Worlds" are back in Dublin later this month and last Saturday, the "Schools" returned to Chelmsford. Paula Radcliffe is one of the favourites to strike gold in Dublin and she regularly tells of her 374th place finish at her first "Schools" outing - an inspiration to all athletes! Richmond and Zetland Harriers had three girls competing in the Junior Girls race. Jessie Roberts continued her impressive ways with 27th place, second North Yorkshire Schools counter in the team which finished 9th. Georgina Zissler represented County Durham Schools and was their sixth counter finishing in 205th place. Ashleigh Robinson was 240th and seventh North Yorkshire girl. RZH also had three competitors in the Junior Boys race but with contrasting fortunes. North Yorkshire Schools Champion, Andy Lagan, was "studded" in a rugby match two days earlier, the injury surfaced and Andy went backwards from a possible top ten place to finish 334th. Philip Fitzpatrick and Tom Gill both had excellent runs finishing third and fourth counters for the County in 86th and 136th places respectively. Nick Zissler ran in the Intermediate Boys race against boys a year older and stronger. Although he was disappointed with his 98th place, he was sixth counter for the County Durham Schools team which was 2nd overall and 1st Minor County. The Clubs eighth runner was Northallerton College student Scott Wardman who finished 75th in the Senior Boys race and was fourth counter for the 9th place North Yorkshire Schools team.
