The last matches in the Northern Men's and Women's T&F Leagues were last weekend and the Richmond and Zetland Harriers' teams both came away with success, but from opposite ends of the athletic spectrum.

Northern Mens T & F Monkton - Jarrow 3rd August 2002

The Men went into Saturday's match at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow in pole position. Having won their three previous outings, they were four and eight points ahead of Morpeth B and Birtley in 2nd and 3rd places respectivelyMike Brooks in Steeplechase and, with a maximum seven points to the match winners, were assured of promotion. The eight-strong team (one sprinter, one thrower, six runners and no jumpers) was reduced to seven after the first event when middle distance runner Chris Peacock pulled a stomach muscle attempting the long jump! Despite (or because of) this setback there were quality performances all afternoon: A-string wins for John Wild in the discus, Dan Brooks in the 400m hurdles and a brilliant sprint-double for Tigere Kushamba plus second places for John Wild in the hammer, shot and javelin, for James Wardman in the 1500m, Tigere Kushamba in 100MTaff Rogers in the 3000m steeplechase and Jon Orange in the 5000m. This was Kush's first outing of the year due to his nursing commitments at DKPH but his 12.2 for 100m and 23.1 for 200m showed his competitive instincts are still intact. The team finished 3rd on the day behind surprise winners Wallsend and Birtley (who failed to catch Morpeth B by just one point!) and now look forward to the Knock-out Plate Final at Cudworth, near Barnsley on Sunday 25th plus a place in Division 3NE next season.

Northern Womens T & F 3rd August 2002

The NWL Division 3 East match at Eastbourne Track, Darlington on Sunday was somewhat different as RZH started the day in 5th place, one point behind Durham City AC and relegation in sight. But Fiona Hughes showed the qualities that earned her the Richmondshire Coach of the Year Award and excelled as Coach and Manager and Competitor and said "what a match: only 14 athletes available, but we did it - we avoided relegation! - we knew it was so close that we had to have a 4 x 400 relay and, with 5 minutes to go, managed to pull it together. Becky Robinson, Amy Baines, Andrea Woodvine and Louise Jackson ran out of their skins to finish second about 20 metres ahead of Durham, then we had a half hour wait to see if we'd pulled it off. It was a fantastic team effort which produced some season's bests and personal bests".
