Northern Mens League Track and Field Knockout Plate Final 25th August 2002
The Senior Men completed their NML T&F season with the Knockout Plate final on Sunday 25th August at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium, Cudworth near Barnsley. The Club hasn’t been able to field their “A” team all season, due mainly to work commitments and injury to key athletes, and this last match was no exception. The team on the day had no sprinters and no jumpers; one thrower and six runners - and lots of enthusiasm. Jon Orange was the pick of the bunch with a win in the 5,000m and there were third places for Eric Williams in the 10,000m, John Aspell in the 800m and Dan Brooks in the pole vault. Dan showed his all-round athletic ability by contesting five individual events plus both relays but he declined the high jump with the bar set at an opening height of 1m40. The makeshift 4 x 100m relay team of Shaun Purkiss, Jon Orange, Dan and Robin Carter were inside the magic minute but the 4 x 400m team continued a Club tradition by being disqualified for a faulty changeover. This didn’t change the match result - winners, Wigan 140 points; RZH 6th 70 points.
RZH marks: John Aspell 800m 2:03.59 & 1500m 4:18.9; Dan Brooks 200m 26.12, 110m hurdles 21.26, 400m hurdles 62.2, pole vault 2m40 & triple jump 10m50; Robin Carter 100m 12.49, 400m 55.40 & long jump 5m30; Jon Orange 5,000m 15:26.28; Shaun Purkiss 3,000m steeplechase 11:24.9; John Wild discus 32m12, hammer 34m12, javelin 33m23 & shot 9m74 and Eric Williams 10,000m 32:56.7.

Stewy Bell of Chester-le-Street, runner-up in the recent CDBramhall/Darlington 10K could only manage 16th place. Three Harriers competed in the event which also included the BVAF Championships - 108th Brian McNabb 37:38, 132nd (& 5th MVO55) Jim Robinson 38:56 and 333rd (& 16th MVO55) Neil Piper 46:02.
