There were just a handful of athletes from Richmond and Zetland Harriers in action last weekend at both ends of the country.

Colyton 10K 17th November 2002

Ian Hepworth, on a weekend away at Lyme Regis, competed on Sunday in the Colyton Devon 10K organised by Axe Valley Runners. The weather and the course were both runner-friendly and he finished in 42:57, in 65th place out of 220 finishers but, with no categories listed, unable to gauge his positions against Veterans his own age.

Bishop Burton Open Cross Country 17th November 2002

There were five younger athletes competing closer to home at the Bishop Burton Open X-C Meeting. Scarlett and Jessica Gray set-off in the under 13 girls race intent on adding to their growing medal collection but had contrasting fortunes. From the gun, Scarlett took her usual position in the leading group along with runners from Kingston-upon-Hull, the organising Club. The hilly course has a wooded area and there were too many runners in the chasing pack for the narrow path. Sixty one girls went into the woods but only fifty four came out on their feet; Jessica and six more runners were caught in a melee and emerged battered and bruised, they were off the pace and did not finish. Scarlett went on to collect a medal for her fourth place and is looking forward to renewing rivalry at the Yorkshire Championships in January - with a full team. In the under 11 boys race, Niall Scott also earned a medal, but his was for winning. Niall made his debut over the country earlier this season with a fourth place finish at Sunderland. This time he had Rory Wadsworth and Michael Scott for company, both having their first competitive outings for the Harriers, and although they didn’t earn team medals, they are all looking forward to their next race, at Carlisle this weekend.
