AUTUMN NEWSLETTER 2001CHAIRMANS REPORTAlthough it is now some weeks since many young people were anxiously waiting for exam results, I would like to comment on balance in our lives. There are of course, times when studies or work have to take priority over recreation. Nevertheless I am convinced that the benefits of exercise combined with rest and recovery will benefit the student and the worker. Fitness and health enable us to cope with stress of studies or work. For those of us who have been involved with the club for many years it is very pleasing to see youngsters who joined the club when very young progress to compete at senior level. It is even more satisfying when they have also done well at their studies in some cases going on to university. The big bonus however is the better health enjoyed by youngsters who carry on exercise into adulthood. As the oldest member of the Club, I know that I lead a very busy life and know that I cope better when fit than when I neglect my exercise whatever the reason. Although we cannot all be winners in terms of medals, we are all winners if the pattern of exercise we establish in our youth continues into later years. No matter what the pressures are in your life try to keep doing some exercise even if you cannot do as much as you would like to do.I hope that we can all have a good Winters training in preparation for next year. Many thanks to all whom work on behalf of the club.Bob Pocklington (Chairman)SECRETARYS REPORT 2000/01 SEASONHaving taken over as Honorary Secretary last year from Heather Atkinson, I have certainly increased the load for our poor postman. It has been a busy year for the club with future developments by UK Athletics. I have seen a lot of parents and helpers qualify as level 1 coaches and have actively become involved within the club. With the departure of Graeme Nicholson (we all knew he would be a hard act to follow) and with his expert knowledge and advice over recent months, the transition and the reallocation of athletes has, in my opinion been a lot better than expected. May I take this opportunity to wish Graeme all the very best for the future and I know that with his guidance he has helped to make my job easier. He will be sadly missed although I have no doubt he will be popping in from time to time where he will be most welcome. Furthermore without the help of the committee, coaches, parents and helpers this club would not survive, its good to see whenever I turn up at training and events the willingness and enthusiasm by everyone involved. I know what it is like to have two children, but sometimes over 50 on a training night, you all deserve medals. Finally, a big congratulations to all the athletes who participated over the last year for the club. I feel your efforts have put Richmond & Zetland on the map of Athletics and a force to be reckoned with. It is a pleasure to see how well you all get along, encouraging and supporting each other in various competitions. Therefore, may your hard work and dedication be rewarded with success and I wish you all the very best for the future.Kath Robinson (Secretary)MEMBERSHIP As this Newsletter "goes to Press", the Club has 148 members - 129 competing and 19 Coaches, Officials or social members. A breakdown of this 129 number, using Categories @ 1/9/2001, shows 5 boys under 11 and 4 girls under 11, 12 boys under 13 and 17 girls under 13, 14 boys under 15 and 16 girls under 15, 8 boys under 17 and 6 girls under 17, 6 Junior Men and 3Junior Women, 15 Senior Men and 4 Senior Women and 16 Veteran Men and 3 Veteran Women. That is 82 athletes under 17 years young. It is little wonder that our Coaches feel under pressure. The shout this year (apart from reminding that tight-fisted half dozen who continue to train and/or race without paying their dues) is for more Seniors or parents of Juniors to GET INVOLVED!
