The L1 is similar to the Canon VT, but is fitted with a lever to advance the film. Unlike the VT, it does not have a self-timer. Flash synchronisation is provided. Both black (small number) and chrome models were available.

Earlier Canon rangefinders (starting with the IIB) have a lever next to the rewind knob which operates the optical finder. This changed with the introduction, on the VT, of a finder window on the top plate in line with the viewfinder. A wheel to the side of the viewfinder sets the finder and moves an arrow in the finder window to one of three positions. These are marked 50, 35 and RF.

The baseplate is engraved MODEL L1 (see picture).

The top of the camera has the following inscription:
