The Canon P (P for Popular) camera, is based on the Canon V1L, and was available in both silver and black (much rarer) finishes.

The V1L has a wheel next to the viewfinder that operates the optical finder. This was omitted from the Canon P, and replaced with bright line frames in the viewfinder for 35, 50 and 100mm focal lengths. These frames have parallax correction. The camera has a film type reminder on the back.

A
built-in self-timer is fitted. Flash synchronisation is provided for both M and X.

The top of the camera has the following inscription:

Models are also known with 25th anniversary engraving and with Japanese army markings.
