This camera was issued by the Phenix Camera Company to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Peoples Republic of China on 1st October 1949. The JG represents the Chinese abbreviation for 'founding of the state', whilst the 50 is for the number of years.

The JG-50 appears to be an exact copy of the Japanese Yasuhara T981 camera that was due to become available in 1998.

Lens mount is a standard Leica 39mm screw and the camera is fitted with an exposure meter (TTL) and a mechanical self timer (10 seconds). The viewfinder has 1:1 magnification and auto parallax correction.

Body covering is red leather.

*  A camera is known with a 2xx serial number and it therefore seems likely that numbers run from 1 to 500.
