Background to the Guide
Sponsored “Munro Challenges” have raised well over £20,000 in the last decade for the
local committee of Macmillan Cancer Support. This has been targeted to providing a
chemotherapy suite at Broadford’s Mackinnon Memorial Hospital.
This small book came into being as a direct consequence of the success of this series of
sponsored hillwalks in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland via a realisation that
inexperienced walkers, although perfectly happy in a guided group, were wary about
tackling the higher peaks without some idea of which hills to tackle first and required a
graduated selection of hills ranging from the simple and easily-navigated to the more-
complex expedition which might link several hills. Such a scheme is not entirely evident
when faced with, for example, a treatise involving routes for the 284 Munros.
The paramount criterion for selection of the walks has been one of safety.
What is original about the Guide?
Very little in route description etc.: the Guide was written to do exactly what it’s title
suggests and that is to allow the inexperienced hillwalker to tackle serious hills in this
area in a gently-increasing order of difficulty, appropriate to their lack of experience.
The effect of confidence in unescorted hillwalking is appreciable and this book strives
to give you a start in exploring these hills in a safe and pleasurable way.
The Guide
The book describes twelve walks in this area, with 17 original photographs. It is produced
in a size designed to fit easily into the pocket in a treated, water-resistant format. It is
designed to be used in conjunction with the four Ordnance Survey Landranger maps
which cover this area.
Each walk carries information about wildlife which has been observed in each locale and
warnings of possible hazards if conditions are not ideal.
